The Brazilian-born Spain international is a top transfer target for the Blues but the Spanish giants insist he remains key to their long-term plans
Atletico Madrid want to build their team around star striker Diego Costa for years to come, according to the club's sporting director Jose Luis Caminero.
Chelsea have made Costa their top summer transfer target as they look to solve their striker problems, and earlier this month Goal revealed the Blues were closing in on a £35 million deal for the Brazilian-born Spain international.
But Caminero insists everyone at the club is planning for next season with the assumption that Costa, who has scored 34 goals in 40 appearances for club and country this season, will remain in Madrid.
"We have renewed almost everyone, including Diego Costa [last summer with a new deal until 2018]," he told Movistar.
"So our mind is set on keeping that block [of players] and slowly bringing some more players in that can go with this project. So we want all our great players, Diego Costa included, to continue here. And next season, at the moment, is planned with him [Costa].”
Negotiations between Atletico and Chelsea over Costa are further complicated by the Spanish club's desire to retain young Blues goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois on loan for another season, but Caminero is confident an extension will be agreed regardless.
He added: "Courtois? We have a very good relationship with Chelsea and will reach an agreement that will be good for Chelsea, for the boy and for Atletico Madrid."
