Montella has been heavily linked with a return to the club he served for 10 years after the the Spaniard resigned from the club following a poor campaign, and De Rossi has encouraged the 37-year-old to make a comeback.
"I would be delighted if Montella returned," De Rossi told FIFA.com.
"I always thought he was a good coach and his experience in Catania has confirmed that."
But Catania are putting up a fight to retain Montella's services after Roma director Walter Sabatini made their interest official.
The Giallorossi are reportedly putting together a two-year contract worth €1.6 million per season to lure their man back to the Stadio Olimpico, with an option for a third year included.
