Malaysia Cup Round Report: Rangel to Selangor's rescue

The Malaysia Cup began this week, and JDT showed their hunger.

This week marked the beginning of the battle between 16 teams, divided into four groups, to decide which team will lift the 2014 Malaysia Cup. Group A contains Felda United, Pahang, JDT II and LionsXII. Pahang recorded their first win against JDT II in Johor Bahru with a 4-0 scoreline. The goal fiesta started off with Dickson Nwakaeme scoring the first goal of the tournament on minutes after he managed to beat the offside trap. The second goal came from another quality striker, Matias Conti, in the 38th minute. Dickson added to his goal tally by scoring the third goal for the Elephants in the 71st minute. Fauzi Roslan ended JDT II nightmare by scoring the fourth goal in the final minutes of the game. In another Group A clash, LionsXII and Felda United shared the spoils with the game ending 0-0 in Singapore.

In Group B, Sarawak and Terengganu played out a thriller which saw the home side win 3-2 in a game played in Kuching. The Crocs shocked the visitors with three goals in the first half after Ryan Griffiths scored two goals in the 10th and 31st minute, before S. Chanturu scored the third goal just before half time. The Turtles changed their game plan in the second half and it almost paid off after they managed to score two goals from Mario Karlovic (59’) and Zairo Anuar (72’), however their comeback fell just short. In another match in Group B, Perak were up against Kedah in Ipoh. The contest saw both sides play quite a balanced game, and it was 1-1 at the break. But it was a different story in the second half as The Bos Gaurus snatched the win, scoring the winning goal in the 52nd minute through Hafiz Ramdan.

In the mouth-watering match between JDT and Kelantan in Group C the current MSL champions won 1-0 at home. Their skipper, Safiq Rahim put in a fantastic performance on the night and scored the winner for Bojan’s side. The goal was slotted home by him after a wonderful through ball from Jasazrin Jamaluddin. Meanwhile, ATM and Penang battled out a 1-1 draw at Selayang Stadium. Both goals were scored in the first half with Hairuddin Omar putting the Gladiators ahead in the 26th minute, while Rafiuddin Roddin got the equaliser for Penang in the 45th minute.

Meanwhile in Group C, Selangor proved that they are ready to win this years Malaysia Cup as they defeated T-Team FC. Paulo Rangel again proved to be the catalyst for the Red Giants, with the striker scoring the winning goal for the team in a 2-1 scoreline. The opening goal was scored by the home side with Patrich Wanggai striking in the 49th minute before Andik Vermansyah equalised for Selangor in the 51st minute.
