Kelantan head coach George Boateng was clearly happy with the performance shown by his players after they defeated MSL champions Lions XII 2-1 in Kota Bharu.
The Red Warriors, who resumed their MSL duty after being knocked out in the FA Cup semi-final by Felda United, were determined to put that loss behind them and they proved it by winning the game against the Singaporeans.
Speaking after the game, George Boateng said “It’s not easy to go against the Lions five-man midfield, but the players did really well to overcome that and to go on and score two goals.”
Kelantan took the lead through national striker Fakri Saarani in the 28th minute, and Khairul Izuan doubled their lead in the second half before Faris Ramli scored a consolation goal for the visitors in the 68th minute.
Kelantan also gave a much-awaited debut for their new import striker, Prince Tagoe, who came on the final seven minutes of the game.
Meanwhile, Lions XII coach, Fandi Ahmad praised Kelantan players and he admitted that the Red Warriors played really well in dominating the game.
“Kelantan played really well as they successfully dominated the game. However, our lack of sharpness upfront also played a huge factor why we lost the game tonight,” added Fandi.
Kelantan are currently 5th in the table with 28 points, nine points behind leaders Selangor while Lions XII are in 8th place with only 24 points from 18 matches.
