Ong Kim Swee takes the Malaysian national team to Qatar for the final group game of the Asian Cup 2015 qualifier without the service of stalwart striker, Norshahrul Idlan Talaha. The Johor Darul Ta'zim (JDT) forward was one of four players dropped from the final squad of 20 players who flew to Dubai to face Yemen.
Norshahrul has already faced the wrath of the national team management for his failure to report for training on the pre-requisite date but it still remains to be seen whether this decision to drop him from the squad has any bearings on future matches. Lack of fitness has been cited as the official reason for dropping the former Kelantan player. Perhaps a valid one, given his lack of playing time this season with JDT.
Junior Eldstal (Sarawak), Shakir Shaari (JDT) and Khairul Azhan (Pahang) are the others who were cut from the squad. Kim Swee has opted for an attacking plan against Yemen and the defensive midfielders just didn't fit into his tactics for this particular match. As for Khairul, he has every right to feel despondent as he was in-line to travel along, if not for the injury he picked up in the friendly against Philippines.
Malaysia goes into this final Group D match against pointless Yemen, hoping to get a win that could just enable them to pinch that final spot to Asian Cup 2015 in Australia by virtue of being the best third-placed team from the qualifying groups.
