The U19 Harimau Muda take on Myanmar U19 tonight in Indonesia for their first match of the U19 AFF Championship
As their Under 23 seniors are successfully undergoing the Merdeka Tournament, the Under 19 Young Tigers are starting on a regional tournament of their own tonight, the 2013 U19 AFF Championship. This year’s edition, which is held in Indonesia, sees them drawn in the so-called group of death of the tournament; Group B alongside hosts Indonesia, Myanmar, Brunei, Thailand and Vietnam.
As preparation for the championship, the Under 19 boys had earlier been sent to Europe to participate in the Mintal Cup, and they emerged as champions. They also took on the U19 Cambodia in a friendly match, last week which they won 2-1.
Speaking to the New Straits Times, head coach Aminuddin Hussin revealed that his target is to go far in the tournament, knowing the stern challenges that will be put up by the other teams in the group. He also plans to take one game at a time.
On Tuesday night, they will be opening their challenges by playing Myanmar at the Petrokimia Stadium, coincidentally one day after their U23 seniors triumphed 2-1 over the U23 Myanmar in the Merdeka Tournament back home. A win will go far towards ensuring the U19 squad’s qualification to the semi finals.
