Premier League side, Sime Darby FC are eager to acquire the national skipper, in return for fans' attention and support
A Sime Darby FC official has revealed to Goal.com Malaysia that the Malaysian Premier League outfit are in negotiations to bring JDT and Malaysia midfielder Safiq Rahim to Selayang.
The 26-year-old 2010 AFF winner was left out on the bench in their Tuesday night’s FA Cup quarter-final win over Selangor, perhaps signalling that he has fallen out of favour with the JDT coaching staff, after failing to perform well for the Southern Tigers this season.
Negotiations for him have only just begun, but the official claimed that Sime Darby are trying to acquire Safiq’s services from JDT for free. This could mean that the deal is only going to be a loan transfer, as a player of the national team captain’s stature will definitely still fetch a handsome transfer fee in a permanent move, regardless of his form.
When pressed for the motivation of his team in wanting to pursue Safiq Rahim, the official explained: "Although we are a small team, we are nonetheless very ambitious.
"We hope that this deal will bring more publicity to our team."
Safiq Rahim could also be attracted to the move in order to be reunited with his boyhood coach; Ismail Zakaria who is currently the head coach of Sime Darby.
