Having been regarded as underdogs prior to the game, PKNS caught the eye of many by securing a morale-boosting 1-0 victory over LionsXII yesterday. A stunner from Nazrin Syamsul 13 minutes from time was more than enough to give them maximum points and register their maiden victory of the campaign thus far.
However, PKNS head coach Abdul Rahman was modest about the victory, claiming that his boys were lucky to win the game, considering that they at times struggled to test the LionsXII defence.
"It was a lucky strike for Nazrin Syamsul, although I'm delighted for him and the team. But we were certainly depending on luck there," he told reporters after the game.
"We were unlucky in the two opening games against Kelantan and ATM but this victory has boosted our confidence and showed that we can match up to the LionsXII.
LionsXII did dominate sporadically during the game but it seemed that fatigue had taken its toll on them as they struggled to maintain the tempo in the second half. PKNS took advantage and claimed 3 vital points at the Shah Alam Stadium.
"The away team controlled the first 25 minutes in the game, but I must give credit to our defence. They got stuck in an defended well.
"We continued fighting after the break and capitalized with the away side looking tired."
With LionsXII losing their 100% record, Pahang are the only side that have won all their games so far and they are looking like real contenders at the top of the table.
