Malaysian teams start great in Frenz International Cup

Both of the country’s representatives at the international competition register wins in their respective opening matches

The Under-15 Frenz International Cup football tournament kicked off on Friday, with Malaysia’s two representatives – the national U-15 team and Frenz United getting off to a brilliant start.

The national side, coached by former international S. Balachandran recorded a resounding 5-0 win over Slavia Praha of the Czech Republic at the MBPJ Stadium. A Najmuddin Samat brace and goals from Kogileswaran Raj, Ahmad Firdaus Ismail and skipper Shahrul Ikmal helped Malaysia collect their first three points in the tournament. In the other Group A game, Frenz United Malaysia started their campaign with an impressive 3-2 win over Incheon Selection of South Korea.

Yesterday, Group B opened at the Shah Alam Stadium with Slovakia and Chonburi FC emerging victorious in their games against Frenz United Indonesia and Persepolis FC respectively. Winger Lubomir Tupta scored first for the Slovaks, before an unfortunate own goal by Hendra Putra sealed a 2-0 win for Peter Stefanak’s boys. In the second match, Chonburi edged Iranian team Persepolis 1-0.

The Frenz International Cup is one of the most lucrative tournaments in the region. The top three winners will receive prize money of US$50,000 (1st place), US$25,000 (2nd place), US$15,000 (3rd place) and US$10,000 (4th place). Not only that, the Most Valuable Player (MVP) will walk away with US$3,000.
