Malaysian national team head coach, Datuk K.Rajagopal, is confident his team will challenge for a place in the 2015 Asian Cup despite being drawn with teams ranked much higher for the qualifiers.
In the draw conducted yesterday (Tuesday), Malaysia ended up in Group D with last editions Quarter-Finalists Qatar, 2011 Arab Games Gold medalists Bahrain, and Yemen.
“We will start preparing although at the moment we’re busy with the AFF Suzuki Cup,” Rajagopal told the press at Wisma FAM in Kelana Jaya yesterday.
“I know it’s a tough group but as a coach I have confidence. We need to be at our best and this is a challenge for the players to do well.
“We know what to expect and I will try to change the mentality of the players, to get them believing in their abilities to beat these teams. This time, we will change the concept and do something.”
Rajagopal, who set the target of qualifying for this tournament when Malaysia won the AFF Suzuki Cup two years ago, also confirmed that he will leave it to his employers to decide what to do if he fails his mission.
“I will make my decision, but of course, FAM will have the final say,” he concluded.
