The Singapore Veterans took the lead through super-sub Steven Tan but conceded an equaliser, before Singapore legend Fandi Ahmad scored a screamer to win the match.SHAH ALAM, 29th SEPTEMBER 2012: The Singapore Veterans avenged their loss to their Selangor counterparts this year after defeating them 2-1 at the Shah Alam Stadium in the Veterans’ match of the 2012 Sultan of Selangor’s Cup, witnessed by a crowd of 60,000.
The Veterans match got off to a steady pace, as both teams stroked the ball around. Touches of flair and brilliance entertained the fans, albeit at a much slower pace.
The Singapore Veterans got the first real chance of the match when midfielder Rafi Ali attempted an audacious chip from outside the penalty box. The attempt was tipped over by Selangor’s custodian, Rashid Hassan.
The ex-Lions soon took the lead just a minute later when a cross by Idham Ridan was met by Steven Tan in the penalty area. The former Tampines Rovers coach coolly slotted the ball home before the on-rushing keeper managed to get anywhere near him.
With the lead, the Singapore Veterans continued to push forward in search of another goal.
But they were dealt with a blow when former Selangor forward Zainal Abidin converted a superb free-kick in the 14th minute beyond the reach of Singapore’s keeper, Shahri Rahim.
The half came to an end with both sides drawing level. The second half saw chances that were few and far between.
The fans were thrilled when Singapore forward Fandi Ahmad attempted his trademark scissors kick, but his attempt was cleared by Zainal Abidin to safety.
The match was decided when a spark of brilliance, once again by Fandi, who turned his marker outside of the penalty box to send a screamer of a shot that curled into the far post of the Selangor goal.
The match ended 2-1 in favour of the Singapore Veterans team.
