Six teams got the ball rolling for the fifteenth edition of the games earlier today with another eight set to follow suit later in the evening
The footballing curtains of the 15th Sukan Malaysia (SUKMA) opened this morning with three games already completed at the official venue, Padang MPK 1 and 2 in Kuantan. All games were played at 8.30 a.m.
Bronze medalist in the last two editions, Kedah, opened their campaign with an unconvincing 1-1 draw while Selangor who won the gold medal in 1992, thumped southern state Johore 4-1. Another game that was played saw Sukma 2008 runner-up Perlis record a narrow 1-0 win over Sabah.
Football, which has always been one of the main attractions of SUKMA, will last for 10 days starting today with games being played every two days. The final is to be played on 14 July at the Stadium Darul Makmur.
Later today, four more games will take place with the clash between Terengganu, the winners of the last two editions and Pahang, their near neighbours and hosts, the most eagerly anticipated. The three other games will be between Sarawak and Penang, Kelantan and Wilayah Persekutuan and Melaka and Negeri Sembilan. Kick-off is at 4.45 p.m for all the games.
The next round of fixtures will take place on the 6th of July and below are the groupings for this year’s event.
Group A: Terengganu, Penang, Sarawak, Pahang
Group B: Selangor, Perak, Johore
Group C: Kedah, Sabah, Perlis, Brunei
Group D: Wilayah Persekutuan, Negeri Sembilan, Malacca, Kelantan
