Later that day, Barcelona came from two goals down to remain in the race thanks to a 3-2 victory away to Villarreal, while Real Madrid are still second after their emphatic 4-0 success at home to Osasuna on Saturday and Athletic Bilbao cemented their Champions League claims by beating nearest challengers Sevilla 3-1 on Sunday.

In goal, Thibaut Courtois was excellent as Atletico held off Valencia by a single goal at Mestalla.
In defence, Sergio Ramos and Dani Carvajal both scored and also kept a clean sheet against Osasuna for Real Madrid, while Andoni Iraola impressed for Athletic in the win over Sevilla at San Mames.
Fabian Orellana was oustanding again for Celta in the Galicians' 4-1 victory at home to Valladolid, while Ander Herrera also stood out for Athletic and scored the Basques' third goal on Sunday. Suso struck to give Almeria a shock 2-1 win at Espanyol and Saul was excellent for Rayo, scoring the first in his side's superb 3-0 success at Granada.
In attack, two Cristiano Ronaldo rockets set Madrid on their way against Osasuna, while Nolito was also on target twice for Celta and Joaquin Larrivey netted the second for Rayo in Granada.
