Germany 2-2 Ghana
Starting again as Germany’s false nine, Götze was well shackled by Ghana’s central defenders, Jonathan Mensah and John Boye, in the first half. He finally created some space in the 36th minute after a Sami Khedira dink over the top released him to volley a strike at goal, but it was saved by Ghana goalkeeper Fatawu Dauda.
Unafraid to drop deep to run at the Ghanaian defence, Götze also won several tackles high up the pitch and surprisingly, in a deeper position on the left flank, perhaps indicative of his free role.
Götze scored his tenth international goal five minutes after the break, when he got in between two defenders to comically meet a Thomas Müller cross with a downward header that bounced off his knee and into the goal, to give Germany the lead.
Ghana hit back to take the lead with two goals in ten minutes, and Götze was sacrificed as Joachim Löw brought on Miroslav Klose to chase an equalizer. Klose promptly scored his record-equalling 15th World Cup goal a minute after coming on with a typical poacher’s goal, and the score remained 2-2 at full-time.
