This top-of-the-table clash pitted the Malaysian Super League’s best defence (Selangor) against its best attack (Pahang). Unstoppable force, meet immovable object. Something had to give, and eventually, Farizal Marlias and his team withstood waves of Pahang pressure to finally end the Elephants’ 100% home record.

Although Andik Vermansyah’s well-worked winning goal will grab headlines (and deservedly so), Farizal was at times the only thing in the way of Pahang’s many attacks.

Farizal added to his league-leading 8 clean sheets in 14 games with a series of outstanding saves, most notably to thwart Matias Conti’s powerful shot in the 13th minute after an Azmi Muslim mistake let the Argentinian through on goal.

In total, Selangor’s goalkeeper made at least five important saves, and was often quick off his line to catch crosses and clean up loose balls in his box. Selangor’s defenders must also be given credit for limiting Pahang’s players to shots from distance.

Coach Mehmet Durakovic’s tactics to hit Pahang on the counter-attack would only bear fruit if his defence stood firm. Farizal was reliable as ever, and he played a major role in the Red Giants’ ascent to the top.
