It was supposed to be a celebratory day for Arsene Wenger in what is a landmark 1000th game in charge of Arsenal. However, Jose Mourinho and his Chelsea side turned party poopers to hand Arsenal their heaviest defeat of the season.
In a way, Mourinho adopted the tactics employed b Brendan Rogers in Liverpool's thrashing of The Gunners. The quick counter attack with pace upon winning possession from the opponent. To do that, Chelsea require a ball winner in midfield who has the energy to press quickly and continuously. That man was Nemanja Matic.
In his second stint with the Blues, Matic is well on the way to justify the huge transfer outlay on him. Whenever Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Santi Cazorla receive the ball, Matic will be apply the pressure quickly and his presence caused them to relinquish possession, which lead to the opening two goals.
Matic wasn't only good in the defensive side of the game but his ability on the ball was also crucial for the home side. Very tidy with his left foot, Matic also displayed an eye for the final pass. His two assists in this drubbing perhaps an indication that he's a well rounded player.
Ever since Claude Makelele left Chelsea, they have been searching for his heir in that defensive midfield role. In Matic, Chelsea may have finally found the right replacement.
