Pahang, Sarawak, LionsXII and T-Team meet expectations and advance to the next round of the FA Cup
The Malaysia FA Cup kicked off with all but one fixture being played all over the country yesterday. 7 Super League teams and 6 Premier League teams won their respective first round fixtures. Should Harimau Muda C lose to Selangor in the final first round tie on Wednesday, the FA Cup would be without any FAM League representative in the next round.
In Ipoh, Pahang survived a torrid 120 minutes as Perak held the favourites to a 2-2 after extra time. Azamuddin Akil opened the scoring the first half before Perak battled back before half time. Long range shots from Hardi Jaafar and Kayar Zayar win put the home side in the lead before succumbing to a Damion Stewart equaliser. Khairul Azhan emerged as the hero as he saved 2 spot kicks in the penalty shootout.
Meanwhile in Alor Setar, Adam Griffiths scored twice to help Kedah knock out FAM League side, Kuala Lumpur to advance to the next stage of the competition. In an all Premier League encounter, PDRM edged out KL SPA by a solitary goal. Ashfaq Ali netting a superb freekick in the 75th minute to send Dollah Salleh’s team to the next round.
Over in Kuching, Sarawak was dragged into extra time by Penang but still managed to secure the win. All thanks to Gyobor Gyepes’ strike in the first half of the extra time after the match finished 1-1 in 90 minutes. In the other match involving two teams who shares the use of the Selayang Stadium, Sime Darby FC’s Syrian import, Mahmoud Amnah scored twice to send ATM out of the competition.
In a match played in the early evening, Azraai Khor will be thanking his lucky stars after T-Team FC managed to fend off a magnificent comeback from UiTM FC. T-Team had taken a 3-0 lead before UiTM stormed back to score two goals to make it an uncomfortable viewing for Azraai. Further up north, Selangor PKNS FC’s Hamka Hamzah continued his goal-scoring form, netting twice to help PKNS FC beat Johor Darul Takzim II. Patrick Ronaldinho Wleh got the other goal in that thriller 3-2 encoutner.
Other matches saw Melaka beat Perlis by 2-1, Pahang Kuantan FC lost 0-1 to Sabah, Terengganu handed a 4 to nothing beating to Shahzan Muda, Negeri Sembilan lost 0-1 to Felda United, PBAPP FC won 2-0 against Sabah Cebagoo. Last but not least, LionsXII also advanced to the next round after comfortably beating DRB Hicom FC 3-0.
