Wayne Rooney was the toast the of the Red Devils as the reigning champions proved that they can’t be written off, just yet.
|MAN OF THE MATCH
Man United 1-0 Arsenal
The match at Old Trafford yesterday was one of 3 different fixtures which ended with the same score line. Of the 3, this was arguably the most enticing match-up. Arsenal came and left as the league leader but it was the Manchester United fans that will have gone home the happiest.
As expected of the clash between 2 of English football’s biggest teams, the margin for error was minimal or close to non-existent. Arsenal made one simple error and left having their lead at the top narrowed from 5 points to 2 points. Robin van Persie scored the solitary goal that decided the game but it was his strike partner who shone the brightest.
Wayne Rooney produced a performance that typifies him as a player. Full of energy and resolve, the England striker was the single biggest threat to Arsenal. He was everywhere, last night. Whenever United’s in attack, he’s there; whenever United is defending, he’s there too. It was his wonderful delivery from the corner kick helped create the goal. Rooney only just missed his crowning glory when a delicate chip from the edge of the box went just inches wide of the post.
Rooney was also the reason the Arsenal’s midfield, who had been magnificent this season, failed to function. Whenever Arsenal had the possession, he dropped back to formed a 5 man United midfield to thwart Arsenal from moving the ball around freely. Very often, he shaded MikelArteta to cut off Arsenal’s main instigator from the base of midfield.
During the transfer window, Rooney’s name was ironically linked with Arsenal and a whole host of other clubs in and out of English football. If last season, his strike partner took all the plaudits, Rooney has been slowly but surely proving to everyone that he is still a force to be reckoned with. On this form, Rooney is almost unstoppable, as Arsenal found out to their detriment.
