Goal.com's 2013 MSL Team Preview: ATM

Goal.com Malaysia takes an exclusive look at the big teams that will be competing for the upcoming season's Malaysian Super League title
By Nik Afiq

About a year ago, B.Sathianathan was preparing his team to compete in the Malaysian Premier League (MPL) and after some amazing displays, they went to become the Premier League champions as well as reaching the final of Malaysia Cup. The 3-2 defeat to Kelantan in that final may well still linger in the minds of ATM fans, but the manager is now ready to prepare his team for life in the Super League.

The Gladiators believe they have what it takes to compete in the Super League after establishing themselves as a force to be reckoned with last year. Awarded as the best head coach for last season, B. Sathianathan promised to do his best for ATM in the Super League this coming season, despite losing a few of his key players.

National defender Aidil Zafuan, his brother Zaquan Adha and also Azmi Muslim have moved to Johor for this season but it has not shook up Sathia. He quickly claimed that he has found their replacements with the arrival of experienced players to ATM.  These arrivals include former national team captain and Negeri Sembilan player Shukor Adan, Norfazly Alias from T-team and another national player in the form of Amiridzwan Taj.  With these players and the arrival of experienced goalkeeper G Jeevananthan, Sathia has a solid defence lined up in front of him for next season.

Mohamad Hafizuddin Azuhar, G.Jeevananthan

Muhammad Aizuddin Ismail, Norfazly Alias, Abdul Rashid Mahmud, Irwan Fadzl Idrus, Amirizwan Taj Tajuddin

K. Reuben, Suhhaimi Ishak, A. Varanthan, Bruno Martelotto, Muhammad Shukor Adan, Venice Elphi Dannykaya, Mohd Fitri Omar, D. Christie Jayaseelan, Zambery Yahya (Vice Captain)

R. Surendran, Marlon Alex James, Yusaini Hafiz Chee Saad, Mohd Nazri Akui, Hairuddin Omar (Captain)

When it comes to scoring goals, Marlon Alex James is clearly a reliable striker for the team. The prolific striker has proven his ability and skills after becoming top scorer in the Malaysian Cup last season, and being awarded as Best Import Player at FAM National Fooball Awards 2012. ATM also added another experienced striker to help Marlon, with Surendran arriving from Selangor. The 30-year-old striker, who has played 12 times for Malaysia and helped the national team to win bronze medal in Sea Games 2005, is expected to ease the goalscoring burden currently on Marlon.

Leading ATM once again this season is influential captain and midfielder Hairuddin Omar, famously known as Hai-O, who remains in ATM despite strong speculation linking him to Terengganu. The Terengganu-born midfielder, who has featured in five Malaysian Cup finals already, is confident ATM can at least finish in top four position.

Returning to the top flight for the first time since 1988, ATM is certainly one of the teams to watch for next season. They dominated the MPL last season and cruised to the final of Malaysian Cup after eliminating a few favourites along the way such as Lions XII and Negeri Sembilan. This season, with the likes of Marlon, Shukor Adan, the ever-green captain Hai-O, and B.Sathianathan as head coach, they will look to make a major impact on the Super League in 2013.
