Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger believes that Nicholas Yennaris will have a successful career following his appearance against Manchester United.

The 18-year-old made his Premier League debut at the Emirates last weekend replacing Johan Djourou at half time in the 2-1 defeat.

Yennaris had appeared in the Carling Cup earlier in the season for the Gunners and Wenger had nothing but praise for the young Englishman.

“He did very well,” Wenger told the Official Arsenal Matchday Programme.

“I like Nico because he has 100 percent focus, good physical qualities, good intelligence, good reading of the game and personality.

“He is a guy who, believe me, will make a big career. He has what it takes to be always better, his whole career will improve because he has the mental abilities of somebody who is suited to the top level.”

Wenger brought Yennaris on at right-back with Arsenal trailing the Premier League champions but revealed that his preferred position is in midfield.

Despite this he handled the pressure of playing in one of his side’s biggest games of the season and fared well against Nani, one of the league's most dangerous wingers.

Wenger added: “He is a midfielder. To come on as a right back against Nani, who is one of the top players in the league, and produce the kind of performance he produced is absolutely outstanding.”
