The Canaries boss says the midfielder's hamstring problem is still being assessed but is hoping his side can reproduce their recent good form against Aston Villa on Sunday

Norwich City manager Chris Hughton has confirmed Leroy Fer has suffered a hamstring injury and admits his absence will be a blow for the Canaries.

As exclusively revealed by Goal, the Dutch midfielder faces six weeks out after picking up the problem during training.

The 24-year-old signed for Norwich in the summer from FC Twente and has gone on to make 29 appearances for the Canaries this season and Hughton could not hide his disappointment at the news.

“He picked up a hamstring injury but we’re still assessing it,” he told reporters at a pre-match press conference.

“It’s of course something that’s only just happened, so we need a bit of time to assess it.

“Of course it’s a blow for us at this stage of the season but it’s one that we’ll have to work around as best as we can.

“The good news is that Ryan Bennett is fit and available selection, but unfortunately Michael Turner and Jonas Gutierrez are still out.”

Meanwhile, Norwich face Aston Villa on Sunday having beaten Tottenham last time out and Hughton is hoping his side can maintain that momentum.

”We’ve been saying it a little while – we’re in good form at the moment, but it’s been about trying to turn that good form into results,” he added.

“We were able to do that against Tottenham. Confidence is good and our level of performance is good, but it’s about turning that into wins. Sunday is another opportunity and we’ll be doing everything we can to do that.”
