The England international scored before setting up Olivier Giroud just seconds later against Aston Villa and aims to emulate the likes of Frank Lampard and Steven Gerrard

Arsenal midfielder Jack Wilshere aims to further define himself as an attacking central midfielder after his goal and asisst set up a 2-1 Premier League win over Aston Villa on Monday.

The England international scored his third goal of the season before setting up Olivier Giroud within a minute in a decisive contribution at Villa Park.

Wilshere has never previously scored more than one Premier League goal in a season and is keen to emulate the likes of Frank Lampard and Steven Gerrard by having more influence in front of the net.

"I'm not really a defensive midfielder. I'd say I was an attacking midfielder so, if you're going to be one of them, I'd say you have to create goals and score goals," he told Sky Sports after the match.

"You've seen the best midfielders in the past, your Lampards, your Gerrards ... I've looked at this season and thought I really had to push on after missing last season through injury."

Asked whether central midfield was his strongest position, Wilshere replied: "Yeah, I think it is. I've spoken to the manager a few times about it and he thinks it is as well.

"In this team we've got great competition and I think it's important to rotate a lot, so sometimes I have to play wide or in the middle."

The win saw the Gunners return to the summit of the league, a point ahead of Manchester City, and the midfielder praised his team-mates for holding onto their slender lead.

"It's a massive three points - especially because we dropped a bit in the second half," he mused. "We have done that a few times, letting teams come on to us, but we dealt well with it.

"In the past we used to feel the nerves when we were up against it but, this season, we haven't and Per Mertesacker and Laurent Koscielny have been brilliant all season.

"We knew we could go back to the top before the game began but we are only taking each game as it comes."
