Spurs recorded their highest ever points tally last season but narrowly missed out on Champions League qualification, finishing one point behind north London rivals Arsenal.
Sigurdsson feels the team must make the best possible start in order to go one better next season, starting against Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park on August 19.

"We need to get off to a good start to the season, so it’s important we get the three points and go from there.
"We started slowly last season, drew a couple of games at home that we really should have won and that cost us. We’re all determined to make a good start and pick up good points in the first few weeks."
Sigurdsson, who scored five goals in his last 14 appearances last term, moved to White Hart Lane in a £7 million deal last year after a successful spell on loan at Swansea.
And while most Spurs fans are eyeing an early derby clash at the Emirates Stadium, the creative midfielder is looking forward to facing his former club after taking on Palace.
He added: "I’ll look forward to playing Swansea but that first game is massive for us. We really want to get off to a positive start."
