Newcastle striker Ranger arrested on suspicion of rape

Newcastle United striker Nile Ranger has been arrested on suspicion of rape.

Northumbria Police have confirmed that they received a phone call on Thursday January 24 that a woman had been assaulted at a hotel in Jesmond.

A spokesman stated that: "A 21-year-old man has been arrested at an address in Forrest Hall on suspicion of rape."

A club spokesman declined to comment on the matter.

Ranger has been in trouble before and was arrested for being drunk and disorderly in 2011, as well as being arrested on suspician of assault the same year. He was found not guilty on both occasions.

The striker has been at Newcastle since 2008. He signed a new five-year deal in 2010, and has since been on loan spells to Barnsley and Sheffield Wednesday.
