The 65-year-old former Liverpool coach has expressed his belief that the Magpies' mooted January signings could in fact have a negative impact on squad morale

Former Liverpool boss Gerard Houllier has warned Newcastle manager Alan Pardew against signing too many French players.

The Magpies having already tied up deals for Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa, Yoan Gouffran and Massadio Haidara this month, taking the number of French-speaking players in the squad up to 13.

And, with Toulouse midfielder Moussa Sissoko also linked with an arrival, Houllier, now a global advisor with New York Red Bulls, has claimed the recruits could have a negative impact.

"You can’t stop the French speaking French," Houllier told reporters.

"The dressing room will be unbalanced. There will be problems."
