Club's supporters triumphed 7-6 over a team of former players to raise funds for Leukaemia and Lymphoma Research, with Gareth Barry, Ashley Young and the captain in attendance

Fans and former professionals of Aston Villa came together on Sunday to play a charity match in honour of club captain Stilian Petrov, who was diagnosed with Leukaemia earlier this year.

The team of ex-players, named Aston Villa Lions and Legends, were pitted against Petrov's XI – a group of fans who had bid £1,000 for their place in the team - with the latter triumphing in a 7-6 victory that raised funds for Leukaemia and Lymphoma Research.

The 33-year-old, who the club announced was in remission in August, attended the game in Halesowen to witness the thirteen-goal thriller.

Also amongst the 2,000 strong crowd were former Villans Gareth Barry and Ashley Young, with the Manchester City player revealed the strong emotion surrounding the event.

"When something like this happens, football comes together," he told reporters.

"It means a lot to people associated with Aston Villa and I know what a great guy Stan is.

"He deserves all the support he gets. He was a fantastic player and it's a shame the illness came when he was a very fit Premier League player."
