Real Madrid - Atletico Madrid Betting Preview: Why an early goal looks likely

Our man in the Spanish capital, Phil Kitromilides, has seen plenty of Madrid derbies and explains why backing a goal before 26 minutes is usually a profitable endeavour
There can be no revenge for Atletico Madrid. Whatever happens in every Madrid derby from now until the end of the century, Los Blancos will always have Lisbon.

The first ever cross-city Champions League final was seconds away from heading to the red half of the Spanish capital before Sergio Ramos's 93rd-minute equaliser.

Now Atleti will have to try and exact some kind of retribution in the form of overcoming Madrid once more as they did in La Liga last season and their first opportunity to do so is in the Spanish Super Cup.

Yet Carlo Ancelotti's side are the overwhelming favorites for Tuesday night's first leg at the Santiago
Bernabeu, with Real priced at 8/15 (1.53) by bet365 for the win, while Atleti are available at 19/4 (5.75) and the draw offered at 10/3 (4.33).

Pre-season, of course, has not been an overwhelming success for Madrid, with the European champions losing all four of the friendlies they have contested.

However, in the one competitive match that they played, they looked supremely dominant, beating Sevilla 2-0 in the Super Cup and in the five competitive games they played against Atleti in the previous campaign, Los Blancos had the edge.

Of those five matches, Madrid won two, drew two (in 90 minutes) and lost one, although Atletico started brightly in most of those encounters leading at half-time in three of the five.

They can be backed at 9/2 (5.50) to once more enjoy an advantage at the interval.

However, one thing that is almost guaranteed in Madrid derbies is early goals and punters may not have to wait long for the goalmouth action to begin on Tuesday.

The price of 5/6 (1.83) for a goal to be scored before the 26-minute mark does not look particularly eye-catching until one looks at the statistics which show that this bet has paid out in each of the last 14 derbies in Madrid. Indeed the only time it has not paid out over the last five years in capital clashes was back in the Champions League final in May.

Both sides have more than enough fire power to score early on and this would appear to be an unmissable selection for Tuesday's game.
