As a result, Wayne Rooney and Steven Gerrard will begin the game on the bench alongside Joe Hart and Danny Welbeck.
Hodgson explained his selection at a press conference, telling reporters: "This is a chance for us to show that we can compete with this team and it is a great opportunity for a lot of the players.
"Barkley and Wilshere both have a chance to really show they are good players, playing together with a lot of other young players
"I've learned how painful it is to build hopes and see a lot of preparation come to no avail. It's unforgiving at this level. It's been a tough few days and difficult to pick yourselves up, but we'll learn a lot about the players tomorrow."
Hodgson also confirmed that Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain will play no part in the game, having failed to recover from a knee injury.
