Four teams scored three or more goals but it was Swansea City's Chico Flores who made the biggest splash in a midweek round featuring a whole host of suspensions
It was a good midweek round for defenders making an impact at the other end of the pitch and Swansea City's Chico Flores (4.5) led the way. His goal, deflected past Maarten Stekelenburg, confirmed the hosts' 2-0 win over Fulham and, coupled with the clean sheet, earned him 12 points in total.
Also popping up from the back to good effect was Manchester City captain Vincent Kompany (6.5), who, despite a five-goal performance from Manuel Pellegrini's men and no clean sheet, was actually his side's best points-earner against Tottenham. The Belgian netted the fifth in a big away win.
Kolo Toure (5) rounded out the top-scoring defenders, supplying both an assist and a clean sheet as Liverpool demolished local rivals Everton 4-0.
He was hardly the only man in red to excel, of course, and, as well as several others just below, his nine points were equalled by Luis Suarez (10). The Uruguayan continues to lead the individual standings on a total of 145 and he both scored and assisted in yet another fine display.
One less expected standout, meanwhile, was Aston Villa forward Christian Benteke (8). The Belgium international has had his fair share of struggles so far this season but won a penalty, converted it and picked up an assist for a much-needed boost in a topsy-turvy derby win over West Brom.
|GAMEWEEK 23 DREAM TEAM
A week of several red cards and four teams conceding at least three goals ensured more negative scores than usual, with Danny Rose (4) having the worst of it. Conceding a penalty early in the second half and being red-carded for his trobles meant a disastrous -3 for the Tottenham star in the worst individual tally of Gameweek 23.
Also struggling was Diego Lugano (4.5). The veteran defender has only mustered a total of 11 all season as he struggles to make an impact at West Brom and, as part of a back line who let in four, as well as giving away a spot kick and earning a booking, he had -2 to his name on Wednesday.
A goalkeeper's lot is often not a lucky one in fantasy football and it was a tough outing for the usually reliable Tim Howard (4.5). A beating from the 'SAS' saw the Everton keeper concede four and earn -1.
Another player to have done well so far this season but suffer in Gameweek 23 was Loic Remy (7.5) of Newcastle. Dismissed as well as Norwich City's Bradley Johnson (4.5), the French striker could only pick up -1 in a dire game, reducing his tally for the campaign to 86.
Steven N'Zonzi (5) also had one of the worst weeks around. In Stoke City's disappointing away defeat to Sunderland, the midfielder was another to be sent off, clocking up a -2.
There were still more red cards and they could potentially be crucial ones. Allan McGregor (4) was issued his marching orders near the end of Hull City's defeat to Crystal Palace and will need to be avoided as a bargain backup goalkeeper.
Fantasy managers will not be the only ones with selection issues in midfield, meanwhile, as Arsene Wenger will have to do without Mathieu Flamini (5.5) for three games. The Frenchman was dismissed in a 2-2 draw with Southampton and leaves only Mikel Arteta as a fully fit, natural central midfielder at the Emirates Stadium.
There were injury concerns as well, including two potentially key ones picked up on Wednesday night. Nicolas Anelka (5.5) has plenty of other problems at the minute but was withdrawn midway through the first half against Villa and is likely to be even more of a dangerous selection from hereon out.
An even bigger deal, though, is Sergio Aguero (10.5). Only just back from a previous physical setback, the Argentine picked up a hamstring injury against Spurs – although he had already picked up another goal by then to take his season’s total to exactly 100 points.
