The Bavarian duo were both on song as their side started 2014 with an excellent win as Sokratis and Jefferson Farfan also make Goal's weekly XI
The Bundesliga returned after the winter break with one of the most eagerly awaited fixtures of the season, with Bayern Munich picking up where they left off with a 2-0 win over Borussia Monchengladbach at Borussia Park, where the Foals had previously been unbeaten at home.
Wolfsburg, Borussia Dortmund and Bayer Leverkusen all dropped points, though, providing a big boost to Schalke's European hopes and Jens Keller's side took full advantage, recording a 3-0 win over crisis-ridden Hamburg. And there was talent across Germany worthy of recognition in Goal's Team of the Week.
In goal, we have Marc-Andre ter Stegen. Gladbach may have seen their unbeaten record smashed by Bayern, but the young Germany star signalled his ongoing commitment to Lucien Favre's side, with a truly impressive performance.
It was a great week for Nurnberg, who won for the first time this season and Javier Pinola was absolutely key to their 4-0 win over Hoffenheim. He is joined at the back by Stuttgart's Antonio Rudiger, who was impressive, despite their 2-1 home loss to Mainz. The back three is completed by Sokratis Papastathopoulos, who was in fine form for BVB in the 2-2 draw with Augsburg.
Jefferson Farfan got a goal and an assist for Schalke in the 3-0 win over Hamburg and lines up in midfield with Hannover's Leonardo Bittencourt, who helped his side begin life under Mirko Slomka with a 3-1 win at Wolfsburg with two goals. Philipp Lahm is the first Bayern player to make the XI, and Josip Drmic completes the midfield after netting twice for Nurnberg.
The front three were all on target. First, Shinji Okazaki of Mainz made his former club Stuttgart live to regret letting him go, Admir Mehmedi got the ball rolling for Freiburg against Leverkusen and Mario Gotze scored a seventh-minute opener for Bayern.
