Despite the Spaniard inspiring Chelsea to a 2-1 victory over Manchester City at Stamford Bridge, 53.3 per cent would rather have the Belgian leading the line at Stamford BridgeA slim majority of Goal readers favoured Romelu Lukaku over Fernando Torres in a vote to see which striker was the preferred option to lead Chelsea’s attack.
The Spanish forward was influential in Sunday’s 2-1 win over Manchester City with an assist and last-minute winner but the 29-year-old lost out to the Belgium international who is on a season-long loan at Goodison Park.
Lukaku netted the opener in Everton’s 2-0 win against Aston Villa at Villa Park on Saturday and has already found the net five times this season compared to Torres, who only scored his first Premier League goal last weekend.
Following an impressive loan spell with West Brom last season - where the Belgian forward scored 17 league goals - the 20-year-old was tipped to challenge Torres for a first-team position, but was instead allowed to leave on loan once again by Mourinho.
Torres has shown signs of his former goal-scoring best with two goals in Chelsea’s 3-0 win against Schalke in the Champions League and an energetic performance against City.
However, even with Torres’ return to form, voters signalled their support towards Lukaku with 53.3% voting in favour of the Everton loanee.
