A friend of the former Selangor Manager, Zakaria Rahim, has revealed that the charismatic figure is one of the candidates in the running to be the next Secretary-general of the Football Association of Selangor (FAS).
The position had earlier been vacated by its former Secretary-general Hamidin Amin when he was appointed to take a similar role in the Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) at the end of June.
Zakaria, or Mr. Zack as he is fondly known to Selangor fans, has been instrumental in the success of the Red Giants that captured back-to-back Malaysian Super League (MSL) titles in 2009 and 2010, and the 2009 FA Cup.
After he left Selangor, he assumed duties as Safee Sali’s manager and played a part in bringing him to Indonesian side Pelita Jaya after the striker's wildly successful run in the 2010 AFF Cup.
The Red Giants have since failed to capture any silverware, with the closest being this year’s MSL which concluded last week; they finished second, four points behind new champions LionsXII.
The source also revealed that Zakaria is running against three other candidates, and that the appointment will ultimately be made by FAS President, Abdul Khalid Ibrahim, who is also the state the Chief Minister of Selangor.
"[Zakaria] also asks that fans pray for the [FAS] President to pick the best possible candidate for the association," the source added.
Days ago, national daily Berita Harian rumoured that the other candidates for the post are the current FAS Assistant Secretary-generals, Hamdan Hashim and Raja Restam Azhar, and an FAS executive committee member, Rosman Ibrahim.
