Scottish League Cup finalists Hearts were made to work hard as they claimed their first victory of 2013 over bottom-of-the-table Dundee.

A late header from substitute John Sutton secured all three points for the Edinburgh side, who found veteran keeper Rab Douglas in top form.

The former Celtic shot-stopper denied Hearts time and time again in the first half, as he made stops from Billy King, Jamie Walker, Jason Holt and on-loan Liverpool striker Michael Ngoo.

It took until four minutes from time for the home side to finally take the lead, as substitute Arvydas Novikovas crossed from the left for fellow sub Sutton to head beyond Douglas to secure all three points and leave Dundee further adrift at the bottom of the SPL.

Former Hibernian winger Ivan Sproule came back to haunt his old club, claiming the winner that helped Ross County increase the gap on Dundee at the bottom to 14 points.

In the blustery conditions in the Highlands, neither team were able to get a hold of the ball to gain an early advantage.

But, less than 10 minutes before the break, Ross County did take the lead as Rocco Quinn fed Sproule to round Ben Williams and tap home from three yards out.

Hibernian rarely threatened Mark Brown in the Ross County goal, with Leigh Griffiths the only player that had any sort of chances for the visitors, in a largely lacklustre showing.

Goals from Gregory Tade, Rowan Vine and Dave Mackay helped St Johnstone to a comfortable victory over Aberdeen and leapfrog the Pittodrie side in the table.

The opener came just after the half hour mark as a poor back-pass by Issac Osbourne was latched onto by Tade who took the ball round Dons keeper Jamie Langfield before slotting it into the net.

Just before the half-time break, Aberdeen levelled things up when Josh Magennis swung in a cross from the right wing for Niall McGinn to smash home from close range.

St Johnstone restored their lead when Langfield failed to deal with a corner from Liam Craig and allowed Vine to slam the ball into the roof of the Aberdeen net.

And the victory was sealed a couple of minutes later when Mackay latched onto the end of a cutback from Steven MacLean to score the third goal of the game.

Scottish League Cup semi-final heroes Esmael Goncalves and Stephen Thompson edged St Mirren past Inverness CT.

The victory sees the Paisley side extend their lead over Dundee at the bottom of the SPL to 14 points as they prepare for the League Cup final against Hearts in March.

St Mirren took the lead midway through the first half when Gonclaves latched onto Kenny McLean’s long ball forward and slotted it beyond Inverness CT keeper Antonio Reguero for his second goal in as many games.

However, on the stroke of half-time Inverness CT restored parity as Richie Foran was brought down inside the box by Conor Newton and Billy McKay stepped up and claim his 21st goal of the season from the penalty spot.

With the game approaching the closing stages, St Mirren snatched victory when Newton crossed into the box for Thompson to rise above the Inverness CT defence and power a header into the net.
