Alan Pardew's men produced a gutsy second half performance to earn a point on Monday. Willie Duncan is confident that the Magpies can cause problems for Pedro Martins' men
Magpies boss Alan Pardew will be hoping for much of the same from his men when they travel to Portugal to take on Maritimo in the Europa League group stages on Thursday night.
After their exertions on Merseyside on Monday night, it seems certain that Alan Pardew will rest a few of his first team regulars for this trip and, subsequently, the Magpies are chalked up as outsiders at 21/10 (3.10) with Paddy Power to pick up the points in Portugal.
Maritimo, though, have not enjoyed a great start to the season and have picked up just five points from their first three domestic games, including a dour 0-0 home draw with Gil Vicente.
Pedro Martins’ side can be backed at 7/5 (2.40) with Paddy Power to enjoy a home victory here. The same firm go 21/10 (3.10) that the match ends in a draw.
Shola Ameobi may have fallen behind Papiss Cisse and Demba Ba in the pecking order for the Magpies but the Nigerian born striker will be keen to seize the opportunity that he is likely to be given here and Ameobi can be backed at a hugely appealing 7/1 (8.0) with Paddy Power to open the scoring for Newcastle.
Maritimo do not pack a potent attacking threat and, indeed, the Portuguese side have scored more than one goal just once in their last 11 matches and Alan Pardew’s men will feel confident of keeping things tight here.
Newcastle may not be at full strength for the trip to Portugal but they should have sufficient quality to grind out some kind of positive result here and the 5/6 (1.83) on offer from Paddy Power on the Magpies in the "draw no bet" market carries considerable appeal, your stake is returned if the game finishes all square.
A narrow victory may well be within reach for Alan Pardew’s men and, subsequently, the 15/2 (8.50) quote for a 1-0 win for the visitors is sure to appeal to value hunters here.
