The striker revealed that he is not worried by fans and football writers who have negative things to say about his game and abilities on the pitchOrlando Pirates hero Benni McCarthy has sent out a warning to all his doubters – he will be back next season and keep banging in the goals.
The former Bafana Bafana striker netted twice as The Buccaneers beat Golden Arrows 4-2 at the Moses Mabhida Stadium on a dramatic final day – a result which meant Moroka Swallows had to settle for second place, despite beating Maritzburg United 1-0.
Pirates were drawing 2-2 at one stage, but McCarthy rose to the occasion – literally – to head home Rooi Mahamutsa’s long throw, before curling home an excellent free-kick in time added on to make sure of the three points.
“It was a fantastic game,” he said to reporters at the final whistle. “Obviously we had to make it count. We didn’t want to rely on the other game [Swallows’ match against Maritzburg]; we just wanted to make sure we win our game.
“And it was a really difficult one – Arrows came with a fantastic gameplan, but we just went out there and gave it our best and managed to score four goals.”
He added, “It’s good for the team because we worked so hard, and I’m absolutely delighted for the fans who came out here. They believed in us throughout the whole season and we just wanted to give them the League.”
McCarthy, who has a love-hate relationship with the South African football fans, also hit out at the ‘haters’ who constantly doubt him.
“This is a very proud moment for me,” he continued. “Once again I go into the record books by becoming the first South African to win three different League titles, so I’m over the moon with that and hopefully these young boys can keep me on my toes so I can keep going and try to break more records.
“People always doubted me and never gave me credit, but I believe in myself and I know what I’ve got, so I just kept going out there and perform and prove people wrong, and it just gives me the greatest pleasure.
“I’m doing the thing I love most, and that is playing football. The haters out there … next year I’m gonna keep coming back with more!”
