Roy Hodgson has named the squad that he believes can bring England glory in Ukraine and Poland this summer & Willie Duncan looks at who might score the goals for the Three LionsAs the dust begins to settle on the debate surrounding the 23-man squad named by England manager Roy Hodgson on Wednesday, the attention of England fans up and down the country will begin to focus on the tournament itself.
Hodgson has named a squad that he believes is capable of winning the tournament and, if that aim is to be accomplished, it is clear that there is one thing that his side will need – goals.
Bet365 has reacted to the squad announcement by compiling a book on which England player is likely to finish as the country’s top scorer in Ukraine and Poland this summer.
Despite missing the opening two matches of the campaign against France and Sweden through suspension, the market is headed up by Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney.
Rooney, of course, is considered something of an England talisman and many will be tempted with the 9/2 (5.50) offered up by Bet365 for the 26-year-old to be England’s top scorer.
There is a feeling, though, that England might well struggle without Rooney’s presence in those opening games and should the Three Lions bow out of the tournament at an early stage, that would certainly open up the market.
Indeed, three England players, Steven Gerrard, Jermain Defoe and Matthew Upson, not included in this year’s squad, ended up as joint top scorers with just one goal apiece in the disastrous World Cup 2010 campaign.
Liverpool captain Gerrard and Spurs striker Defoe are both available at 9/1 (10.0) with Bet365 to top the goalscoring charts for their country again at Euro 2012 while Manchester United striker Danny Welbeck, who will be appearing at his first major tournament, is 6/1 (7.0) with the same firm.
The selection of Andy Carroll was a contentious one in the eyes of many England fans but the Liverpool striker is marked up as second favourite at 11/2 (6.50) with Bet365.
Gerrard is likely to enjoy the pressure that pulling on the captain’s armband brings and the 31-year-old midfielder is excellent value at 9/1 (10.0) with Bet365 to end the campaign as England’s top scorer, especially given that Hodgson’s men will be without the influential Rooney for their opening two matches of the campaign.
Tip: Steven Gerrard to be England's top goalscorer at Euro 2012 at 9/1 (10.0)
England top goalscorer at Euro 2012:
Wayne Rooney - 9/2 (5.50)
Andy Carroll - 11/2 (6.50)
Danny Welbeck - 6/1 (7.0)
Steven Gerrard - 9/1 (10.0)
