The Tigers, led by Harimau Muda youngsters, bared their fangs by roaring to a goal-fest against a poor Sri Lanka side at the Shah Alam Stadium in an International friendly
Malaysia can be proud of their youngsters as they hammered Sri Lanka 6-0, with five of the goals coming from Harimau Muda players Wan Zack Haikal and substitute Mohd Hazwan Bakri.
The absence of several national players such Ashari Shamsudin, Badrol Bakhtiar, Norsyahrul Idlan Talaha and Khairul Fahmi Che Mat didn’t affect the Tiger’s performance one bit. Safee Sali was however back from his club Pelita Jaya to lead the attack as coach K.Rajagopal experimented with his line-up.
Sri Lanka set the pace of the game in the first 20 minutes, but Malaysia had their first chance when Shakir Ali was presented with a decent ball from Safiq Rahim; he however blasted high.
In the 25th minute, Safiq Rahim then set up Wan Zack Haikal who beat the offside trap and calmly beat the goalkeeper to score his first senior goal.
Their deadly combination worked to great effect once again as Safiq delivered another sublime ball to Wan Zack who slotted past the goalkeeper for his second goal of the night.
Malaysia went in search of more goals in the second half and they were rewarded in the 70th minute by substitute Mohd Hazwan Bakri, who scored moments after entering the pitch.
Mohd Hazwan added to his debut goal for Malaysia match by tapping home Shahrunain Abu Samah’s low cross to put the Harimau Malaya 4-0 up.
Three minutes later Pahang striker Azimudin added his name to the scoresheet after Aidil Zafuan’s free-kick hit the post and he was in the right position to tap home.
Mohd Hazwan Bakri completed his hat-rick near the death by heading home Safiq Rahim’s cross to cap a virtuoso Malaysia win which will surely do good to their FIFA rankings.
Malaysia coach K. Rajagobal stated that he quite satisfied with the team’s performance in the second half and urged his men to maintain their good performance in the next fixture.
