Live Commentary

  • That's it from me for this afternoon. Thanks very much for joining me, I've been Chris Baker and I hope you enjoy the rest of your weekend.
  • Wilfried Bony continued his excellent recent form with a brace of goals this afternoon, it has been a great first season for Swansea's record signing so far. This game however will probably be best remembered for Jonjo Shelvey's magical first half strike. It was a goal that he will never forget and one that he will no doubt watch over and over. Villa were in the game up until Hernandez's goal which made it 3-1. From there on the fight appeared to drain away from the Midlander's and it was a comfortable victory in the end.
  • Swansea claim what looks like a crucial victory over fellow strugglers Aston Villa. Garry Monk must be absolutely delighted with his player's who put in a real team performance with some moments of genuine quality. Paul Lambert has had to deal with some off the field issues in recent weeks but the performance of his side in the second half will be of real concern.
  • 90' + 4'
    Penalty GoalWilfried Bony
  • 90' + 4'
It's all over! The penalty kick was virtually the last action of the game. Final score 4-1 to Swansea.
  • 90' + 4'
GOAL 4-1 SWANSEA! Wilfried Bony makes no mistake from twelve yards. The striker whips the ball into the right hand corner beyond the reach of Guzan who went the right way but had no chance of saving the penalty. This scoreline may flatter Swansea but Aston Villa looked a dejected side.
  • 90' + 2'
    Yellow CardAshley Westwood
  • 90' + 2'
    Yellow CardNathan Baker
  • 90' + 2'
PENALTY TO SWANSEA! Things just go from bad to worse for Villa. Nathan Baker makes what can only be described as a suicidal challenge, clattering into Emnes and leaving Mark Clattenburg with no option but to award the spot kick.
  • 89'
    Yellow CardMarc Albrighton
  • 89'
This match is ending in a rather scrappy fashion but the home side won't care one bit as this three points all but confirms their Premier League status. Worrying times for Paul Lambert and the Villa fans.
  • 88'
    SubstitutionWayne Routledge Marvin Emnes
  • 87'
Marvin Emnes is Swansea's third and final change replacing Wayne Routledge for the closing stages of this encounter. Villa have huffed and puffed since going three down but haven't ever really looked like mounting an unlikely revival.
  • 85'
After another good spell of posession Bony lets fly from all of 25 yards but his effort is rather wild and ends up in row z! That would have been the icing on the cake for Swansea.
  • 84'
That third goal really seems to have knocked the stuffing out of Aston Villa. Swansea are controlling the game now, keeping the ball very well and have their opponents at arm's length.
  • 83'
    SubstitutionJonathan De Guzmán Jay Fulton
  • 81'
This is a big moment for Jay Fulton who is making his Swansea City debut, the youngster comes on for De Guzman. SHOT! Shelvey's freekick is on target and has Guzan at full stretch to palm the ball away. This game is slipping away from Villa at the moment. The home team look more likely to make it four at this stage.
  • 79'
It's now or never for Villa as they look to turn the screw. Lowton sends in an inviting cross which is headed only as far as Albrighton, who looks to bend the ball into the top corner but his shot is only worrying the away supporters behind the goal rather than the Swansea 'keeper.
  • 78'
Agbonlahor is brought down rather cynically as he is in full flight as he hurtles towards the Swansea penalty area. The freekick is in a decent position just to the left of the box, Westwood curls the set piece in but no-one can get a vital touch and Vorm safely gathers.
  • 77'
    Yellow CardJordi Amat
  • 77'
    SubstitutionÁngel Rangel Neil Taylor
  • 76'
Grant Holt enters the fray and indicates that Aston Villa are going to go with four up front. Angel Rangel has pulled up and will be unable to play any further part in this match, looks like a muscle injury. Neil Taylor comes on and will be in an unfamiliar right back role.
  • 75'
    SubstitutionKarim El Ahmadi Grant Holt
  • 73'
    AssistJonjo Shelvey
  • 73'
    GoalPablo Hernández
GOAL! 3-1 Hernadez who has been very good in the second half finds himself in acres of space at the far post, the winger has time to control Shelvey's cross before smashing the ball into corner of the net. Bertrand was on the line and got his head to the shot but could only divert the ball into the roof of the net. Guzan had absolutely no chance at all and was left badly exposed by his defence there.
  • 70'
As we go into the last twenty minutes the points are very much still up for grabs here. Swansea will fancy themselves on the counter attack as Villa have to commit more men forward.
  • 68'
Villa aren't giving up by any means as they look to haul themselves back into the game but they nearly go 3-1 behind as Pablo Hernandez tricks his way into the penalty area before clipping in a delicious ball to the back post but Lowton is well positioned to eliminate the danger.
  • 67'
    SubstitutionAndreas Weimann Callum Robinson
  • 66'
Weimann is the man to be replaced with Robinson coming on. The teenager made his first Premier League appearance last time out as a sub against Southampton at Villa Park.
  • 64'
Paul Lambert seems to be contemplating a change for his side. In an attacking sense he has two strikers to call upon - the experienced Grant Holt or 19 year old Callum Robinson. Players at very different stages of their careers.
  • 61'
CHANCE! De Guzman can only direct his effort wide of the post from Routledge's intelligent cut back. On reflection, the midfielder may feel that he should have hit the target and if he had it surely would have been game, set and match for Swansea.
  • 60'
SAVE! Shelvey cut inside from the left and rather scuffs his shot at goal. Guzan gets down to it and has to tip the ball wide, despite the lack of power on the strike it was heading in. Villa are looking very shakey at the back and Swansea are trying to put this game to bed.
  • 58'
Ashely Williams heads the ball across the area from Ben Davies' long corner but once again Guzan is there to pluck the ball out of the sky and set Villa away on the counter attack. Delph drives the away side forward but Swansea snuff out the threat.
  • 56'
A typically flowing and sweeping move from Swansea sees Shelvey release Davies down the left flank. The defender manages to fire in a cross but Guzan is able to claim the low ball.
  • 54'
Villa finally get the ball forward and look to relieve some of the pressure they have been under. Weimann and Albrighton have been busy down the wings but their industry doesn't lead to a chance on this occasion.
  • 52'
De Guzman latches onto Shelvey's flighted pass but Bertrand recovers well and sees the ball out for another Swansea corner. Davies pumps the ball into the danger area but this time it is Ron Vlaar who deals with the cross. Good start to the second half from the Welsh team.
  • 50'
Westwood gives away a silly freekick by barging into the back of Hernandez. Shelvey's cross is a low one which is sliced out for a corner by Delph. Left back Ben Davies takes the corner which is headed emphatically out of harm's way by Villa defender Nathan Baker.
  • 48'
Swansea have begun the second period in the same way that they did in the first half. The home side have been moving the ball quickly and getting forward in numbers. A third goal for the Swans would surely be too much for Aston Villa to overcome?
  • 46'
    SubstitutionLeandro Bacuna Matthew Lowton
  • 46'
Swansea get the second half started. Aston Villa have made a change with Matt Lowton coming on for Bacuna. it is unclear at the moment if this was an enforced substitution or merely tactical.
  • It has been a half of excitement with three excellent albeit very different goals. Aston Villa looked like they might get blown away in the opening minutes as Swansea came flying out of the blocks. The away side managed to weather the storm and were good value for their equaliser. After getting back on level terms Villa seemed the more likely to go ahead but they were undone by a simply fabulous goal from Jonjo Shelvey.
  • Half time 2-1. Despite being ahead you sense that Garry Monk won't be totally satisifed with the performance from his team so far. Paul Lambert will on the other hand will be fairly pleased with many aspects of Aston Villa's first 45 minutes. The away side are very much still in the game. the next goal, if there is one, will be crucial.
  • 45'
There will be two minutes of added time at the end of this first half.
  • 44'
Albrighton's excellent crosses have been a feature of this half. Unsurprisingly a lot of the player's have struggled to keep their feet on this sodden playing surface. Villa are knocking on the door as they go looking for an equaliser before halftime but Swansea are standing firm.
  • 42'
Villa will feel slightly hard done by to be behind. Pablo Hernandez finds himself in some space in the inside right channel but the Spaniard slips at the vital moment.
  • 39'
Agbonlahor who has been bright so far scampers down the left wing before cutting inside and crossing the ball into the box. Ashley Williams heads the ball clear. Fabian Delph then fires a wild effort way over the bar.
  • 38'
Excellent save from Vorm! Weimann is found by Westwood's pass and almost in one movement the striker swivels before firing a fizzing shot at goal but the Dutch goalkeeper is equal to the effort and parries the ball away to safety.
  • 35'
Guzan is busy again as the American stopper has to race off his line to clear the danger after Wayne Routledge had looked to play in Bony on goal.
  • 33'
Wilfried Bony does well to win the ball back with a sliding tackle, the big centre forward then works half a yard before unleashing a shot with his left foot which Brad Guzan saves. Very positive and direct play from the number 10.
  • 30'
That strike from Shelvey is definitely a contender for goal of the season. Shelvey will have to go some to better that in his career!
  • 28'
What next? It has been a breathless and thoroughly entertaining opening to this match. Can Aston Villa come back again? They certainly don't appear to have lost too much confidence from their latest setback and are back on the attack.
  • 26'
    GoalJonjo Shelvey
WHAT A GOAL! Jonjo Shelvey scores a sensational goal. 2-1 to Swansea. The young Englishman collects Guzan's goalkick and fires the ball on the half volley from just inside the Aston Villa half. Wayne Rooney eat your heart out. A fantastic piece of skill and technique.
  • 24'
Swansea immediately respond by forcing successive corners after being pegged back. Brad Guzan deals with both deliveries very well by punching the ball away each time.
  • 22'
    AssistMarc Albrighton
  • 22'
    GoalGabriel Agbonlahor
GOAL! 1-1 and it's been coming ever since Swansea went ahead. A very well worked equaliser. El Ahmadi played Albrighton in down the right wing and the midfielder put in a pinpoint cross that Agbonlahor couldn't miss. Game on.
  • 18'
The away side have responded well and have put Swansea under pressure. Albrighton forces a corner after his shot from the left-hand side of the area is deflected away for a corner. The winger then takes the corner himsef but Villa can't make anything of it.
  • 16'
Aston Villa seem to have settled down and are starting to recover from the early blow of going a goal down. Agbonlahor picks up the ball in space and drives at the Swansea defence but he drags his shot from the edge of the box well wide of the target. Better intent shown their from the visitors.
  • 14'
A poor touch from Leon Britton meant that Rangel had to bring down Fabian Delph just outside the area. Unfortunately for Villa Westwood's curling freekick is too long for everyone in the penalty box and goes out harmlessly for a goal kick.
  • 12'
Fantastic start for Swansea, the chance fell to the man they would've wanted on the end of it and the outcome was never in doubt once Bony got in on goal. Villa look a bit shellshocked at the moment and need to keep it together if they are to stop going further behind. The Swans are looking to expose Villa's high defensive line.
  • 10'
    AssistJonjo Shelvey
  • 10'
    GoalWilfried Bony
GOAL! It's the man of the moment Wilfried Bony who opens the scoring. The Ivorian striker breaks the offside trap after Jonjo Shelvey's precise pass, goes one-on-one and slides the ball past Guzan into the bottom corner.
  • 7'
Ashley Westwood tries to set Marc Albrighton away down the right but the ball just runs away from the lively winger. Villa recover possession in the Swansea half and Gabriel Agbonlahor wins his side a freekick in a dangerous position. Leandro Bacuna, who has shown himself to be something of a dead ball specialist fires his low freekick straight into the wall.
  • 4'
Aston Villa are just trying to assert themselves and get into the game. They are trying to hurry and hassle Swansea, who as ever have looked to get onto the front foot straightaway and implement their natural passing game.
  • 2'
A nervy moment in the Villa goal for Brad Guzan who drops Angel Rangel's deep cross after being put under severe pressure from Wilfried Bony. The referee didn't blow but you can only assume that he would have done had it lead to a goal. A physical and direct start from the home side. Guzan did manage to recover the loose ball in the end.
  • 1'
We are underway, Mark Clattenburg is the match referee. The conditions in Wales are absolutely appalling it is pouring with rain which should make for a slick playing surface.
  • Swansea's home form this season has been disappointing while Villa always look more suited to playing on the counter attack away from home. Both teams are missing their key striker's Christian Benteke and Michu. History suggests that this will be a tight game as the sides have drawn two of the last three league meetings. The sides couldn't be separated earlier in the season with the game at Villa Park finishing 1-1.
  • We are certainly at the business end of the season and both of these clubs will be desperate to claim the win to climb away from the relegation zone. Garry Monk will be hoping that Wilfried Bony can carry on from where he left off against Newcastle United last week. Aston Villa were solid in their goalless draw with Southampton but Paul Lambert will be looking for more from his team going forward this afternoon.
