Will feel he could have done better with Carroll's header as he failed to get a strong enough hand to it. Given no chance from Diame's low drive but will have been disappointed with his overall contribution.
Looked to be one of Sunderland's main attacking threats as he stormed up and down the right, delivering a string of threatening crosses. Unfortunately his hard work getting into those positions often went to waste with the final ball never there.
At fault as Carroll opened the scoring, the England international outjumping him with ease. Not his finest moments in a Sunderland jersey and was substituted amongst ironic cheers from the home fans.
A shaky performance that saw him miscontrolling balls under no pressure whatsoever and mislaying a few passes. Couldn't deal with Carroll's physicality.
Perhaps lucky to keep his place after a disappointing display at Anfield midweek and didn't do to much to justify Poyet's selection this time around either, nullifying his side's own threat with some woeful passing out from the back.
Returned to the side having served his match suspension and didn't find Downing to deal with on the flank. Missed a couple of decent chances to get his side level but continued on tirelessly down the flank.
Was left out of the starting eleven on Merseyside, a decision made even more puzzling by his influence this evening. Rarely wasted a pass and troubled the visitors from set pieces.
Had a glorious chance to net his first goal in five years but couldn't keep his composure when given the freedom of the West Ham area. Made way for Johnson as Sunderland looked to get back in it.
Happy to get on the ball but all to often found his support was limited when he picked up the ball in the centre of the park. Lost his way a little with some poor passes but picked up towards the end and layed on a string of late chances.
Given another chance up top by Poyet but didn't really assert himself, playing mostly with his back to goal and coming back into deep positions to pick up the ball. Had one chance in the second period but was denied by Adrian.
Back in the starting line up having sat out the trip to Liverpool but starved of any form of service in the opening period. Made a nuisance of himself in wide positions but couldn't quite find that shooting opportunity.
Given very little to do in the opening period despite the home side dominating possession. Should have been given a sterner test by Cattermole's tame effort. Nothing he could do about Johnson's strike however.
Afforded the hosts far too much space on the flank and was outwitted by Bardsley throughout the first half. Was fortunate the hosts were unable to make th most of it and was whisked off at the break to be replaced by Armero.
Back in the team in place of the injured Collins and coped well at centre-back for the opening hour or so, dealing easily with the combined threat of Wickham and Borini. Was given a little more to think about in the final stages though.
Given few problems on the wing in the opening half as Sunderland failed to mount any real pressure down that side. Had Borini for company in the second though and struggled with positioning, often finding the Italian sneaking in behind him.
Took the lead at the back in the absence of Collins and showed a great deal of awareness and guile to thwart the hosts on a regular basis. Borini will point that some of his tactics verged on the illegal but an impressive display nonetheless.
Had a lot of space to play with given Sunderland's adventurous formation but rarely made the most of it. Drew the wrath of a couple of team-mates with some poor decision making and poorly timed runs. Should have added a third but denied by a great Mannone stop.
As expected, built up an instant understanding with Carroll that was evident from the opening minutes. Was lucky not to be penalised for a handball in his own box but it wasn't spotted by Webb.
Had the habit of cutting inside from the left for most of the evening but despite the frequency it still caused the home side problems. Took his goal well after being laid on by Carroll.
Had to work hard in the middle and press as West Ham failed to provide much of a presence in the middle of the park. Still got involved in the final third when the chance arose but was too casual on the ball to often.
Came close to his first league goal of the season but saw his effort fly inches wide. Didn't see much of the ball as the hosts dominated possession but was happy to sit deep and let Sunderland try and play around him - something they rarely managed.
The former Newcastle man was roundly booed every tie he touched the ball but he silenced the home crowd with a thumping header inside the opening 10 minutes. His aerial presence played a huge part in the second goal too.
