Got away with a really lackadaisical clearance which was charged down by Cisse and generally looked like he was down on confidence until he made a stunning save from Santon in the second half.
Booked for a strong challenge on Cisse in the first half which meant the defender had to tread carefully. Struggled with the presence of the visiting attackers but looked much more solid in the second half.
Nearly inadvertently set up Lallana with a long-range effort, but occasionally struggled with the threat of Gutierrez on the left. Showed good improvisation to blast the ball into the box for the first goal.
Had his work cut out with the fearsome duo of Ba and Cisse but cut out crosses and stood firm in the box, frustrating the strikers.
It was a fairly quiet performance from the full-back, but a solid one nonetheless. Provided good support for Lallana and coped well with Newcastle's pushes forward on the wing.
Largely anonymous for most parts, but showed good touch when in possession. Looked much more assured in the second half, particularly after the second goal.
Put in a solid performance and linked up well with Ramirez and Lambert. Had the easiest of finishes for his goal but was in the right place to be found by Ramirez.
Set up the first goal and scored the second; it was an excellent performance from the Uruguay international. Linked up perfectly with Lallana and Lambert as the hosts looked far more threatening going forward.
Regularly won the battle with Santon and managed to whip some dangerous balls into the Newcastle six-yard box.
In the battle with Tiote the Saints midfielder lost out on several occasions, but often showed good reading of the game to snuff out Newcastle's attacks.
Lead the line as expected with another spirited performance. Rattled the bar with a free-kick before having an excellent chance blocked. Quieter in the second half as he tired later on.
Made an excellent low save to deny Puncheon but was at fault for the second goal with a poor clearance. Overall it was a good performance from the ever-reliable shot-stopper.
Found Puncheon difficult to deal with on his own and wasn't able to get forward as well as he usually does. Forced a world-class save from Gazzaniga in the second half with a fine header.
Made a vital clearance early on to deny Lambert, and stuck tight to the Southampton striker whenever possible.
Often outnumbered by Ramirez and Lallana on the flank, and was caught out by Puncheon in the build-up to the second goal.
Struggled to cope with the hosts' revitalised attacking threat but did make several important challenges.
Looked sharp on his return to the starting line-up, was full of running and fulfilled defensive duties as well, but failed to bridge the gap to the strikers. Had a superb chance one-on-one but choked under pressure.
The stand-in skipper drifted out of the game for large periods. He had more joy when he switched to the left-hand side and was able to put pressure in the defence when linking up with Ferguson, but moved into the middle late on and gave it away regularly.
Was buoyed by the support of Gutierrez on the left but too often failed to track back, leaving the visitors exposed on their flank. Subbed at half-time as Pardew looked for more of a threat.
Won the midfield battle early on but was often caught out by Southampton's sweeping attacks and generally had a frustrating afternoon.
Not involved anywhere near as much as he would have wanted, mostly due to a real lack of service from midfield.
Suffered from the same problem as Cisse and his early header wide was his only real contribution to the match.
