A committed display from the Pole, as energetic as a goalkeeper can be and alert to snuff out counters. Helpless for Mata's precise free-kick.
Held off Evra's forward surges well and dealt calmly with Welbeck, too. Might have given the attending Roy Hodgson a decision to make.
Showed why his opponents covet him so much with a display full of attitude in both attack and defence, though booked for sliding in on Januzaj. Taken off late on to a standing ovation.
One or two iffy passes that went unpunished but stood up very well to United's disparate forward line.
As calm and composed as ever at centre-back, doing a fine job of marking Robin van Persie out of the game.
Played a mostly defensive role in locking down the midfield, though his influence faded somewhat in the second half.
A perennially available figure between attack and midfield and on hand to deliver the assist for Lambert's goal, though helped by slow defending.
A strong, imposing display at the base of Southampton’s midfield diamond and he made himself useful when going forward, too, winning the ball both high and low up the pitch and passing better than usual. Gave away the free-kick for Mata's equaliser, however, with an awkward challenge for which he saw yellow.
Flitting between the top and the right of the diamond, the midfielder was a bright presence though somewhat lacking in attacking prowess. Brought off for Gallagher after the equaliser.
Showed glimpses of his game-changing quality but unable to work the United defence as completely as he often does. Taken off with 20 minutes to go to a huge standing ovation from the adoring Saints faithful.
Though he missed having Jay Rodriguez to run around him, the England international put in a solid shift and took his first-half goal with confidence. Hodgson should have been impressed.
Coped well enough with the tamer shots on offer but his distribution could have been punished more.
Should have done better in intercepting Davis’ pass for Lambert’s goal but otherwise strong.
In his last game for United, the Serbian was given a tough time, bloodied as he challenged Lambert in the build-up to the striker’s goal and booked for cutting off Lallana in his stride. Largely effective, though, in preventing too much penetration for the hosts.
Had more space to utilise than most of his team-mates but his control let him down on occasions and he had little joy against Clyne. Directly compared to his heir apparent, Shaw, it was clear why United would be willing to let him go.
Did a solid enough job filling in at right-back, though Shaw got away from him a couple of times. The watching Roy Hodgson will not have learned anything new about his qualifications to back up Glen Johnson.
Struggled as the lone barrier to the Saints' midfield domination in the first half but settled more upon Carrick's arrival and went close with a header.
The most isolated of United’s forwards in the opening 45 minutes, though he applied himself reasonably well in trying to contain Shaw and was bright whenever called upon after the break. Rightly did not win a penalty for going to ground easily.
Physically outmatched by Southampton in the centre of midfield, it was no surprise to see the Japanese withdrawn at the break after being unable to make any impact on the game.
R. van Persie
With few chances to take on Fonte and Lovren directly, the Dutchman held the ball up well when he could but more often offside than on the ball. Taken off for Hernandez, having never stamped his foot on the game.
Often dropped a little deeper in hopes of finding the ball but isolated in the first half. Improved in the second in front of a shored-up midfield and struck a fine free kick to equalise, scheming a little more thereafter. Substituted in the late stages.
Had few opportunities to use his pace on the left wing but put in one ambitious cross that nearly connected with Mata and flicked a late chance wide.
Took the place of Lallana with 20 minutes left and put in some useful deliveries from corners without being able to penetrate the defence from open play.
Introduced late on for Shaw and solid in the time that he had but unable to change the game.
Brought on for Cork after United's equaliser but lacked the subtlety required to break down the visitors' experienced defence.
