Having lost to Pahang FA in their first game of the Malaysian Super League season, Fandi Ahmad will expect his men to progress in the FA Cup against Premier League oppositionFandi Ahmad's LionsXII coaching debut was hotly anticipated, but it ultimately ended in defeat.
After the 1-0 loss to Pahang FA last Friday in the Malaysian Charity Shield, which also served as a Malaysian Super League (MSL) match, the Singapore legend has the chance to register his first win in the FA Cup on Tuesday night.
The LionsXII will face second-tier Premier League side DRB-Hicom FC at Bishan Stadium, with Jalan Besar Stadium currently undergoing renovation works.
Fandi will be keen for his charges to avoid making a first-round exit, like they did at the hands of PKNS FC last season, courtesy of a 1-0 away loss.
The LionsXII showed enough to suggest they will not be run over by opponents in the match against Pahang, despite their average age of 22.5 years. However, Fandi will be aware that they have to be more clinical with their chances, having had enough to at least force a draw.
To make things worse, striker Khairul Amri suffered a groin strain in that match to join Shahfiq Ghani and Khairul Nizam on the injury table. This leaves Sufian Anuar as the sole fit forward, which will mean a reshuffle in tactics against DRB-Hicom.
Their opponents finished sixth in the Premier League last season and there is no better opportunity for the LionsXII to get their season off the ground.
