Shamrock Rovers 0-4 Liverpool: Premier League runners-up outclass Irish

Brendan Rodgers' side swept aside their SSE Airtricity League opponents with a confident display from their second team

Trevor Croly's Shamrock Rovers put in an impressive first-half performance at the Aviva Stadium against Premier League runners-up Liverpool, but Brendan Rodgers' mostly second-string side added three goals after the interval as they outclassed the Tallaght outfit. Iago Aspas opened the scoring early on, but the Hoops could not hold out despite some decent defending, and saw Fabio Borini, Jack Dunn, and Martin Kelly add to the tally.

Liverpool controlled the tempo of the game and had the majority of the possession as expected, but Shamrock Rovers matched them in the first half and were unlucky not to have equalised on two occasions.

Aspas opened the scoring for Liverpool when Jordon Ibe cut an immaculate ball back to him and the midfielder finished with ease, sweeping the ball past keeper Barry Murphy and into the net.

The Hoops defended well to withstand the Liverpool attack, looking to hit their Premier League opponents on the break, with Ciaran Kilduff and Ryan Brennan going close with two fine headers.

Borini looked destined to score on his return to Liverpool and fired a low driven shot beyond Barry Murphy at the start of the second half to double his side's lead. Dunn and Kelly sealed the victory for the Reds as Rovers struggled to keep the ball and create any chances in the second-half.

With many of his squad going to the 2014 World Cup, the performance against Shamrock Rovers provided Brendan Rodgers with the perfect chance to assess some of his less-established players ahead of the 2014-15 Premier League season. Jordon Ibe stood out for the Reds, putting in an excellent performance, and deservedly picking up the man of the match award.
