The former Perak and Muangthong United striker scored a brace to help Selangor win their opening match of the season
It was a dream start for the Red Giants as they won their first match in the new Malaysia Super League (MSL) after beating T-Team in MBPJ Stadium, Petaling Jaya.
The home crowd did not have to wait long as their new hitman, Paulo Rangel combined well with Juninho upfront before unleashing a low shot only to be denied by Shahril Sa’ari. It was a good reflex save by the custodian.
Selangor continued to pile on the pressure and custodian Shahril Sa’ari twice came to their rescue, producing excellent saves to deny Paolo Rangel's header from close range in the 21st minute and Juninho's well struck free kick in the 27th minute.
T-Team finally got their first chance after Evaldo headed a cross by Shahrizal from a free kick but only to be saved by Selangor’s goalkeeper Farizal Marlias.
After the break, Selangor continued to show their superiority as playmaker K. Gurusamy made a run in the middle and blast a shot only to be blocked by Marzuki Yusof.
Despite the excellent performance by the Shahril Sa’ari, he could do nothing to stop Selangor from taking the lead as Paulo Rangel finally converted from close range header when his defence failed to make a clearance from a corner kick in the 65th minute.
Paulo Rangel scored his second goal with another header in the 72nd minute mark through a cross from substitute, Hadi Yahya. Hadi barges down the right byline, and crossed to the target man, Rangel who headed swiftly beyond Shahril Sa’ari's reach and into the net.
After the two goals lead, the Red Giants slowed down although T-Team continued to push more men upfront by putting on substitute Patrich Wanggai and Azlan Ismail. But their plan failed as Selangor’s back four were rock solid with the commanding goalkeeper Farizal Marlias making sure the team keep their clean sheet.
In the end, Selangor who gained more than 65% possession throughout the game, notch a priceles win and stamp their intent as one of the league contenders this season.
