Coupe de France
February 28, 2013
• Parc des Princes, Paris
Referee: S. Lannoy
• Attendance: 42000
A late Marseille attack breaks down and the full time whistle is blown. A Zlatan Ibrahimovic double either side of half time sees PSG through to the last eight of the Coupe de France as Marseille succumb to a second 2-0 defeat to the Parisian side in four days. From me, Ben McAleer (@BenMcAleer1), and the Goal.com team, I bid you adieu and one hopes you have an enjoyable evening. Make sure you keep an eye out for the match report and ratings out shortly on the site. Until next time, ladies and gentlemen.
90' + 3'
Fanni and Ayew link up well on the left and it's the latter who delivers along the floor of the PSG 18 yard box, but Sakho hoofs clear and the attack breaks down.
90' + 1'
A Marseille free kick deep in PSG territory with Valbuena to deliver. He crosses, but the referee blows for a free kick for the hosts for a supposed foul in the box.
And there will be three added minutes here at the Parc des Princes.
Matuidi looks to play through to Menez on the right, but his ball is blocked by Lucas, who wins a foul having been brought down by the PSG man.
Bar a late minor miracle for Marseille, it looks like PSG will be heading into the last eight of the Coupe de France as they battle to win the domestic accolade for the ninth time in their history.
Marseille appear to have given up on this. Sloppy passes and frustration boiling over now.
Yellow Card David Beckham
Yellow Card Jordan Ayew
It's all heating up again here as Jordan Ayew's challenge on Beckham sparks a coming together between players from both sides.
Lovely ball up the wing from substitute Lavezzi for Menez, only for the linesman to have his flag up for offside against the latter.
Pushing for a third, Gameiro is picked out in the 18 yard box, but under pressure, his effort is weak and finds its way into the hands of Mandanda.
André Pierre Gignac
Van der Wiel concedes a free kick 30m from goal. Something special from here and we'll be in for a tense finish. Valbuena lays off to Gignac, who drags wide much to the delight of the PSG fans.
A Valbuena corner is cleared and PSG counter again, Ibrahimovic, Gameiro and, surprisingly, Sakho leasing the charge. The former duo link up well, but the Swede's pass to the PSG defender is weak and Marseille clear for a corner.
PSG counter through Menez, with Gameiro to his left and Ibrahimovic to his right. He opts to pass to the former, but the Frenchman gets the ball caught under his feet. Wrong move, in my books.
It's all gone a bit flat at the Parc des Princes with PSG happy to hold onto the ball. Marseille appear to have given up on this with a little over 15 minutes to go.
Romao is lucky to have not received his marching orders after kicking out at Matuidi. Frustration beginning to get the better of the Marseille man, who received a booking just after Ibrahimovic's first goal in the first half.
PSG looking for a third and it's Ibrahimovic at the heart of the attack. He forces a corner off N'Koulou, which amounts to little and Marseille clear.
The fans are loving this now - every successful PSG pass is being greeted by an 'OLE!'
This tie is all but over now unless Marseille can rally and net quickly in the next few minutes.
Yellow Card Clément Chantôme
Penalty Goal Zlatan Ibrahimovic
GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOAL!!! This game is over! Ibrahimovic, cool as a cucumber, sends Mandanda the wrong way ans stands arms aloft on the penalty spot to double PSG's advantage.
PENALTY! Ibrahimovic is picked out by Beckham. He drops his shoulder and as he cuts back, Morel kicks out and brings down the PSG man. Dead cert penalty for the hosts.
Menez and Ibrahimovic link up well and the latter waits for the run of Gameiro. He holds and plays into his teammate, but Lucas can clear for a corner. Beckham delivers and picks out Camara and with the goal gaping, Gignac clears off the line to keep the score at 1-0.
First 15 minutes and the game is settling into a very familiar pattern. PSG are happy to hold onto the ball, but Marseille looking dangerous on the counter attack. Ayew being more involved has added another dimension to their attack.
Some very good work by Fanni on the right, who gets the better of Maxwell. The Marseille man has plenty of space to drive into, but opts to play into Gignac, who has strayed offside and the referee pulls play back. Fanni's boot may've fallen off in the process, but he could've kept going.
A threatening Marseille counter attack is stifled by the industrious Van der Wiel. Superb tracking back from the Dutchman.
Role reversal here as Ibrahimovic delivers for Van der Wiel, but the Dutchman mistimes his run and Marseille can clear.
Maxwell delivers a free kick to the back post for Ibrahimovic, who heads back across goal. However, none of his PSG teammates are able to get on the end of his flick on and Marseille clear.
Gignac picks up the ball on the edge of the 18 yard box and turns Camara. He goes for goal, but Douchez tips his effort onto the post and out for a corner. Valbuena picks out Lucas, who heads wide.
Marseille have started the half attacking predominantly down their left flank. Ayew not involved enough in the first half and will need his creative influence to drag themselves back into this tie.
Barton and Ayew link up well to pick out Gignac, but the Marseille striker is flagged for offside and rightly so.
And it's Marseille to get us underway for the second half.
And PSG are now on their way back out for the second half.
Well, it's no longer AC/DC but 'Go West' by Village People. There are spectrum's and the choice in music is at either end of it. Either way, both teams on their way out for the second half. Marseille, booed as the emerge on the pitch, have 45 minutes left to save their Coupe de France campaign.
Parc des Princes blaring out 'Highway to Hell' at half time by AC/DC, presumably to intimidate Marseille for the second half. Either way, it's AC/DC at half time, which is just awesome.
And it's half time in Paris, Ibrahimovic's goal in the 35th minute the difference here. A lively affair, but lacking in any real clear cut chances. However, PSG are good value for their lead and it leaves Marseille with it all to do in the second half if they wish to lift their 11th Coupe de France.
45' + 1'
A late Marseille attack breaks down and the referee blows for half time here at the Parc des Princes
Beckham cross, but it's cleared by the Marseille defence and there is to be one added minute at the end of the half.
Good work from Maxwell on the left forces a PSG corner late in the first half.
Menez spots Chantome darting down the right and looks to play the midfielder in, but his pass has too much zip on it and Mandanda comes to claim.
Valbuena's corner is headed clear to Fanni, who mishits his effort. Ayew looks to make something of it, but Douchez can claim and alleviate the danger.
Lucas down clutching his throat after a coming together, but it appears Barton mistimed his challenge on Ibrahimovic and took out his own teammate.
And Ibrahimovic and Barton are now having strong words with each other. I doubt we'll have seen the last of that battle this evening.
Yellow Card Alaixys Romao
And it's all heating up at the Parc des Princes as players from both teams involved on a scuffle on the edge of the PSG 18 yard box. Looks as though Chantome wasn't happy with Romao's challenge on Beckham.
Goal Zlatan Ibrahimovic
GGGGGGOOOOOOOOOAAAAAAAAALLLLLLLLL!!!!!!! A wonderful ball from Chantome is picked up by Ibrahimovic. The Swede runs at Lucas, who falls, and despite Mandanda getting something on the effort, the PSG man makes it 1-0 to the hosts.
At present Marseille are focusing a number of their attacks down the right, presumably to target Maxwell who is making his 36th appearance of the season tonight.
Ibrahimovic forces a save low to Mandanda's left after a left footed drive from the PSG striker. Relatively few clear cut chances so far, but the hosts are the stronger of the two teams with a little over half an hour gone.
And Gameiro is down following a Morel challenge. He looks to be in pain and is currently receiving treatment.
Valbuena this time pushes down the right and aims to pick out Gignac at the back post, but it's too close to Douchez who easily claims the ball.
Kadir drives around the right and with teammates flooding into the PSG box, put a ball into the are, only for Douchez to claim the ball.
Ibrahimovic knocks down a Douchez goal kick for Van der Wiel. The Dutchman holds up well before passing to Beckham on the right. The midfielder cross into the box and picks out Gameiro, who heads across goal and out for a goal kick.
Kadir aims to pick out Ayew, only for PSG to clear. The look to counter through Gameiro, but the attack breaks down after the Frenchman unintentionally blocks a cross that was aimed for Chantome.
Surprise surprise, Marseille concede a foul, and who do you think committed it? Barton.
Matuidi again plays into Gameiro this time, but there it's too close for Mandanda and the Marseille goalkeeper can clear for a throw in.
Ibrahimovic offside again having strayed marginally off and is flagged following Matuidi's pass over the top.
It's a very open affair after the opening exchanges at the Parc des Princes. No real clear cut opportunities, but the potential for goals in this is there.
PSG take a quick free kick and Menez is played in. He's one on one with Mandanda, only to be tracked by Fanni and the Marseille man can make an excellent last ditch challenge to deflect for a corner for the hosts. Beckham delivers, but it's knocked wide by Ibrahimovic.
Marseille then go down the other end, but Gignac floats his header just wide having been picked out by Valbuena.
At the other end, Gameiro is played in behind the Marseille backline by Beckham and the latter plays across the 18 yard box. He picks out Ibrahimovic, only for the PSG man to mishit and the ball is cleared.
Fanni is played in by Valbuena on the right, but the Marseille right back's cross is a hanging one and Douchez can claim.
Menez drives for goal, but his effort is poor and Mandanda can get down and claim, regardless of Ibrahimovic charging in to follow up.
Ibrahimovic picks out Van der Wiel on the right flank. The Dutchman drops his shoulder and puts in a testing ball to Gameiro to the near post, but it's touched away from him and Fanni heads clear.
Beckham plays one of his traditional Beckham passes up field and Ibrahimovic heads down, but Gameiro isn't on his toes and Marseille regain possession.
Fanni plays across the 18 yard box and picks out Ayew, only for the midfielder to head well wide of the target.
Gameiro sees his shot blocked and Marseille can clear their lines. Bright start for PSG, but the visitors are growing into this.
The pressure getting to Menez? The winger, captaining the side tonight, has already misplaced a few passes.
Barton attempts a through ball for Gignac, only to see the ball through all the way to Douchez after the Englishman put too much power into his pass.
It's all PSG early on and they're happy to probe the Marseille midfield early as Gameiro plays into Ibrahimovic, but the Swede is flagged for offside.
And it's PSG, kicking from right to left, who get us underway.
Of course, we all know the most important battle of tonight's encounter - David Beckham vs Joey Barton.
And the two teams are on their way out onto the pitch. We're just minutes away from kick off in this last 16 Coupe de France Classique.
And both teams are having their last checks and they're ready to come out of the tunnel before kick off.
PSG, on the other hand, have lifted the Coupe de France eight times in their history, their last coming in 2010.
Here's a little something for you before kick off. Marseille have won the Coupe de France a record 10 times, but haven't lifted the trophy since 1989.
And we're a little over 10 minutes away from Le Classique kicking off for the second time in four days, and part four for this season. Are you excited? I sure am.
