Negeri Sembilan 1-1 Terengganu: Effa Owona misses late penalty as Deers are held

Jean-Emmanuel Effa Owona will be taking a cold shower tonight after he blazed a late penalty into the night as Negeri failed to exact last weekend’s defeat to Terengganu.

Negeri Sembilan came into this match with a solid home record, having only lost one match thus far. But that form was put in jeopardy as early as the fourth minute when Abdul Manaf’s run was ended by Mohd Shaffik and the referee had no choice but to award the Turtles a penalty.

Francis Forkey Doe stepped up and coolly converted for his tenth goal of the season.

From then on, it was one way traffic as Negeri woke up from their slumber and took control of the match.

Effa Owona was in the thick of things, curling a free-kick inches wide before sending a header just over the crossbar.

Negeri’s dominance finally paid off in the 21st minute when they equalized through none other than Effa Owona.

Terengganu’s defense gave away possession all too cheaply and when Effa found himself with the ball at the edge of the box, he made no mistake with a firm grounder that gave Terengganu goalie Sharbinee Alawi no chance.

Effa Owona continued to be a menace in the Terengganu back four, with Muslim Ahmad especially struggling to cope with the Cameroonian’s power and aerial ability.

The Negeri striker drew a great one-handed save from Sharbinee before Shukor Adan’s follow-up header hit the bar as Terengganu were desperate to go into the break level.

Muslim Ahmad and company cut a more compact side in the second-half to stop the threat of Effa, although the hitman did come inches close from connecting with Tengku Qayyum’s low cross just after the restart.

The final twist of the game unfolded four minutes before the end as Sharbinee lunged foolishly at Shahurain and the referee immediately pointed to the spot.

The goalkeeper was lucky to even stay on the pitch as he flew studs up which certainly warranted a red card.

Effa Owona stepped up with great confidence but amazingly blazed his shot high and wide as Negeri Sembilan ended the match somehow shortchanged of a win.
