Kedah's survival hopes hanging by a thread after defeat to Negeri in Alor Setar in what was billed as a must win match
Goals from Jean Effa Owona and national winger S.Kunanlan, were enough to condemn Kedah to their eleventh defeat of the season and help Negeri Sembilan end their three game winless streak at the Darulaman Stadium.
Kedah, who went into the game knowing they must win to save their status as a top flight team, started the game on the offensive, but a lapse in concentration towards the end of the first half was punished by Negeri’s deadly Cameroonian striker Owona, who put the visitors in front on 43 minutes. It was Owona’s first goal in three games.
As soon as the second half started, Kedah went in search of the equalizer but the goal they were so desperate to find proved to be very much elusive before the speedy Kunanlan put the nail in the home side’s coffin with the second goal eight minutes from time.
With this result, Kedah’s hopes of avoiding the play-offs are as good as gone while Negeri now have a five point cushion over seventh placed PKNS.
