In the Southern teams' first battle of the season, Johor Darul Ta'zim (JDT) are set to face defending champions LionsXII at Larkin Stadium with the mission to avoid a second defeat in a row. The Southern Tigers started this season's campaign as title favourites, but after two games they are yet to show their true potential despite the star players they have at their disposal. An unconvicing win against Perak earlier this month and the defeat to T-Team in their second game may not be a good sign for the fans and for Jimenez.
JDT will have no shortage of players to choose from, but they will pin their hopes primarily on Pablo Aimar, hoping that other players can create more space for him to be the creative force of the team. Azwan Roya, who was impressive in the first game, also needs to improve on his last outing, although Aidil and Baihakki have been consistent in defence and will give the team a solid defensive platform.
For LionsXII, the win against Selangor last Saturday came at the right time before their trip to JDT, as it will give the team a huge morale boost after the disappointing start to the season. Having began the season without several of their key players, the Lions did well to see off the Red Giants with a 94th minute winner scored by Amri.
Consisting of young players, LionsXII will undoubtedly go for a defensive approach against the attacking Johor Darul Ta'zim. Goalkeeper Izwan Mahbud, Safuwan Baharuddin and Khairul Amri will need to perform at their best if the Lions want to get anything from this game and continue their winning momentum.
