Live Commentary

  • Thank you for joining me on what has been a fantastic match from the Allianz Arena as Bayern once again go in search of the Champions League trophy with that emphatic 4-1 thumping of BATE. Until next time, good night.
  • Bayern's potential opponents in the last 16 are Porto, Arsenal, Milan, Real Madrid, Shakhtar Donetsk, Benfica or Galatasaray. The draw will be made on Thursday December 20.
  • As for BATE Borisov, they can take pride from their Champions League campaign and will no doubt be looking to go one better next year after such a promising start. Their European adventure is not over just yet however as they finish Group F in third place, ensuring qualification for the Europa League.
  • My man-of-the-match today has to be Xherdan Shaqiri. The Swiss midfielder proved a real handful for the BATE defence all evening with his pace and trickery, assisting the first goal before notching one for himself late on. Jupp Heynckes will also be delighted to see Mario Gomez slowly getting back to full fitness after his long absence through injury.
  • FULL TIME: BAYERN 4 - 1 BATE. What a second half that was! Four goals, two red cards and plenty of entertainment here at the Allianz Arena. In the end, Bayern showed their class and strolled to a comprehensive victory. The only blemish on their peformance was that late consolation strike for the Belarusian side, but the Bavarian side look strong contenders to challenge Chelsea's European crown this campaign.
  • 90' + 3'
BATE nearly score another when Vasilyuk is played in on the right-hand side of the box but his low shot across goal brushes the outside of the post.
  • 90' + 1'
Alaba looks to replicate his earlier effort with a looping drive from distance but Gorbunov watches it fly just over the bar.
  • 89'
    Goal Egor Filippenko
BATE PULL ONE BACK!! The travelling support finally have something to cheer as Contento dispossesses Vasilyuk in the box, but the ball falls kindly for centre-back Yegor Filipenko who thumps an unstoppable effort off the post and past Neuer. No clean sheet for the Germany no.1.
  • 87'
NEARLY A CONSOLATION FOR BATE! Baga unleashes another effort from range which takes a wicked deflection off Dante, leaving Neuer wrongfooted, but the German goalkeeper is relieved to see the ball creep around the post.
  • 85'
The BATE players look like they are already on their holidays although Baga does test Neuer with a shot from distance. In truth, it has been one of his easiest nights in goal.
  • 84'
    SubstitutionMaksim Bordachov Aleksandr Yurevich
  • 83'
    Goal David Alaba
4-0 BAYERN! David Alaba adds his name to the scoresheet with a goal of real quality as he kills Ribery's corner dead in the box before executing a powerful left-footed effort into the ground and past the helpless Gorbunov. It's been all too easy for Bayern!
  • 82'
Franck Ribery is not the player you want to face with tired legs and he surges past three BATE defenders before Filipenko is forced to concede a corner.
  • 80'
BATE just cannot find a way to penetrate this Bayern defence and are forced to shoot from distance, but Renan Bressan's shot bobbles wide of Neuer's left-hand post. Ten minutes remaining.
  • 79'
Franck Ribery has been heavily involved since coming on but he cannot add his name to the scoresheet when his ambitious shot from distance fizzes over the crossbar.
  • 78'
Bayern are in complete control of this tie now and Shaqiri clips the ball into the box, looking for the aerial threat of Gomez. but Filipenko produces a vital header to clear.
  • 76'
Ribery whips in a corner from the right which Gomez flicks on to the back post but it cannot quite reach Alaba and Filipenko clears.
  • 74'
    Yellow Card Roman Vasilyuk
  • 74'
Franck Ribery looks to pour more misery on this BATE defence but with options left and right, the French winger tries to go it alone and is dispossessed on the edge of the box.
  • 72'
    SubstitutionBastian Schweinsteiger Franck Ribéry
  • 71'
NEARLY A FOURTH FOR BAYERN! Xherdan Shaqiri and Mario Gomez link up excellently once again before Gomez sets up Alaba on the edge of the box, and the left-back's low drive flashes narrowly past the post.
  • 69'
    Yellow/Red Denis Polyakov
THINGS GO FROM BAD TO WORSE FOR BATE! Denis Polyanko who had been booked in the first half, goes down under a challenge from David Alaba, screaming for a penalty, but Willam Collum adjuges the right-back to have dived and brandishes the red card. Ten men apiece now.
  • 66'
    SubstitutionVitali Rodionov Roman Vasilyuk
  • 65'
    Assist M. Gómez
  • 65'
    Goal Xherdan Shaqiri
3-0 BAYERN! That surely signals all three points for the Bavarians. Mario Gomez breaks the offside trap with a clever run before floating the ball into the box for Shaqiri, who despite being the smallest man on the pitch, manages to head in from a few yards out after Maxsim Bordachev had been caught daydreaming. That's his first Champions League goal of the season.
  • 64'
    SubstitutionToni Kroos David Alaba
  • 63'
Dzmitry Baga tries his luck from range, but his thumping effort is well blocked by Tymoshchuk.
  • 62'
BATE are refusing to give up hope of salvaging something from this match and Hleb, who looks the most likely to make something happen, lays the ball off to Volodko on the edge of the area, but his curling effort is caught by Neuer.
  • 60'
Bayern push forward again and Shaqiri finds Schweinsteiger just inside the box, but the stand-in captain cannot generate enough power on his shot and Gorbunov comfortably saves.
  • 58'
    SubstitutionArtyom Kontsevoi Renan Bressan
Viktor Goncharenko makes his first change of the game, replacing Kontsevoy with attacking playmaker Renan Bressan. The Brazilian-born Belarusian has scored 18 goals for his club this season.
  • 56'
Vitali Rodionov looks to pull one back for BATE but his ambitious long-range strike skews embarrasingly wide for a throw.
  • 54'
    Assist Bastian Schweinsteiger
  • 54'
    SubstitutionThomas Müller Dante
  • 54'
    Goal Thomas Müller
BAYERN EXTEND THEIR LEAD! Despite losing Jerome Boateng only three minutes ago, Bayern double their tally. Toni Kroos floats in a freekick from deep within the BATE half which is flicked on at the near post by Bastian Schweinsteiger, allowing Thomas Muller to volley home from close range. Prolific finish from the German international although there were shades of offside there.
  • 54'
Muller's reward for scoring that goal is to be immediately substituted. Jupp Heynckes throws on Dante, clearly looking to hold onto this lead and finish as group winners.
  • 51'
    Yellow Card Rafinha
  • 51'
Rafinha receives a caution for his protests.
  • 50'
    Red Card Jerome Boateng
RED CARD BOATENG!! The former Manchester City defender receives a straight red card for a reckless two-footed challenge on Vitali Rodionov. The studs were shown, giving the referee no choice but to dismiss him.
  • 50'
Thomas Muller looks to whip in a cross for Mario Gomez but it is slightly overhit and Gorbunov claims.
  • 48'
Alexsandr Hleb wins a freekick 25 yards out and with options in the middle, Dzmitry Baga opts to shoot but sees his fierce effort fly straight into the hands of Neuer.
  • 47'
Bright start to the second period for Viktor Goncharenko's side. With third place guaranteed in this group, perhaps the 35-year old coach (the youngest in the competition) has told his side to go for broke.
  • If Bayern hold onto their lead, it will signal their tenth consecutive home Champions League match unbeaten (discounting last year's final of course).
  • Half-time statistics show that Bayern enjoyed 61% of the possession and had eight shots on goal compared to BATE's two. The Belarussian side have Brazilian-born playmaker Renan Bressan on the bench. Could he inspire BATE in this second period?
  • In the other match in Group F, Valencia lead 1-0 in Lille by virtue of a penalty from Jonas. As things stand, Bayern will emerge as group winners as a result of their head-to-head record against the Spanish side.
  • HALF TIME: BAYERN 1 - 0 BATE. The German side have dominated the first 45 minutes here and took the lead in the 22nd minute courtesy of Mario Gomez's poached effort after good play by Xherdan Shaqiri. Viktor Goncharenko needs to shake things up if his side are going to take anything from this match. Let's see what the second half has in store. Let me know your thoughts and predictions via Twitter @MaxBentley1.
  • 45'
A good end to the half for BATE Borisov but they lack creativity in the final third. A relatively easy first half for Neuer.
  • 43'
Chance for BATE! Maxsim Bordachev plays a wonderful cross-field pass to Edgar Olekhnovich but the midfielder's cross is excellently intercepted by Daniel Van Buyten. The ball rebounds into the path of Denis Polyakov but the right-back skews his shot wide of Manuel Neuer's left-hand post.
  • 40'
Rafinha continues to maraud forward from right-back and his teasing cross somehow evades three Bayern shirts in the box. The Bavarians are getting closer to a second goal.
  • 38'
NEARLY A SECOND FOR BAYERN! Xherdan Shaqiri, who has been at the heart of things for Bayern tonight, finds Toni Kroos with his back to goal. The young German midfielder swivels before firing a bending effort towards which goal which is excellently punched away by Gorbunov.
  • 37'
Bayern continue to probe at the BATE defence but they cannot find that killer pass. Eight minutes remaining in the first half.
  • 35'
From the resulting freekick, Toni Kross fires straight into the wall. Disappointing.
  • 34'
    Yellow Card Denis Polyakov
What a fantastic move from Bayern! Muller squares the ball along the face of the 18-yard box for Gomez, who plays a deft backheel into the path of Shaqiri. The Swiss playmaker is ready to pull the trigger but is hauled down by Polyakov, who is duly shown a yellow card.
  • 33'
Bayern are looking to double their lead before half-time and Kroos tries his luck from the edge of the box, but contrives to slice his effort high and wide of Gorbunov's goal.
  • 32'
Kroos sprays a lovely pass out to the right for Rafinha and the Brazilian looks up to find Muller with a neat slide pass but his cross is excellently blocked by Filipenko.
  • 30'
Bayern attack down the other end with Mario Gomez who plays a pass to Toni Kroos, looking for the one-two, but the return pass is overhit. Apart from picking the ball out of his net, Andrey Gorbunov has hardly been tested.
  • 28'
Hleb looks to play an eye-of-the-needle pass through to Rodionov but Jerome Boateng steps in to intercept.
  • 27'
Bastian Schweinsteiger lays the ball off to Tymoshchuk on the edge of the box but the Ukrainian dallies in possession and the chance goes begging.
  • 26'
Bayern threaten again when Kroos works the ball out to Muller on the right. The 23-year-old looks to cut the ball back for Gomez but Yegor Filipenko anticipates the play excellently and intercepts.
  • 24'
BATE are looking to enjoy a short spell of possession to halt Bayern's momentum. Can they respond to going behind?
  • 22'
    Assist Xherdan Shaqiri
  • 22'
    Goal M. Gómez
BAYERN LEAD! Xherdan Shaqiri is the architect as he wriggles past Denis Polyakov before squaring the ball for, you guessed it, Mario Gomez, who drifts in front of his marker to tap in from close range. Typical poacher's finish for the German international. 1-0 Bayern!
  • 19'
The Bayern subs watch on from under their woolly blankets on the bench, it is -1 degrees in Munich tonight.
  • 18'
Shaqiri whips a dangerous-looking cross deep into the box but there is no Bayern shirt gambling at the back post and the ball runs out for a throw.
  • 16'
Bayern's win a corner which is initially well dealt with by BATE but when it is tossed back in by Tymoshchuk, Van Buyten comes within inches of converting from close range.
  • 15'
Mario Gomez is understandably looking a bit rusty in the opening 15 minutes but BATE cannot afford to give him a single inch of space. The German striker's tally in the competition was only bettered by Lionel Messi last season.
  • 13'
Rafinha is looking to get forward from right-back as much as possible in these early stages and he whips in a cross for Mario Gomez, but his header deflects over the bar.
  • 11'
FIRST TEST FOR NEUER! BATE string together a series of passes which ends with Hleb finding Kontsevoy on the edge of the box, but the midfielder's shot which is heading for the bottom corner, is well saved by the Bayern keeper.
  • 9'
The BATE fans are in fine voice here in the Allianz Arena but it is the home side who are doing all the pressing at the moment. Xherdan Shaqiri whips in a cross from the left but it is dealt with, somewhat awkwardly, by Denis Polyakov.
  • 7'
BATE launch a counterattack and Vitali Rodionov finds himself one-on-one with Diego Contento, but the 22-year-old defender produces a crucial challenge to deny the Belarusian.
  • 6'
Toni Kroos floats a freekick into the BATE box but Maksim Bordachev rises above Mario Gomez to head clear.
  • 4'
First chance of the game for Bayern! Xherdan Shaqiri finds Mario Gomez with a neat dinked pass inside the box but the tall striker cannot get his shot away although the ball does fall for Bastian Schweinsteiger who can only fire straight into the gloves of Andrey Gorbunov.
  • 2'
Bayern are stroking the ball around nicely in the opening moments of this match, forcing BATE to defend deep within their own half. In fact, the Belarusian side are yet to touch the ball.
  • The teams emerge from the tunnels to the Champions League anthem, Bayern will kick off in their black strip and BATE will play in their away yellow kit. Tonight's referee is Scotland's William Collum.
  • Former Arsenal and Barcelona playmaker Alexsandr Hleb starts for BATE Borisov, alongside Vitali Rodionov who turned in a man-of-the-match performance against Bayern in Minsk. Renan Bressan, who also scored in that famous 3-1 victory, is on the bench.
  • Jupp Heynckes chooses to rest some of his key players, leaving Franck Ribery, Philipp Lahm and David Alaba on the bench. Last season’s second-top goalscorer, Mario Gomez, is handed his first start in the competition this term up front whilst Dante is surprisingly left on the bench in spite of coach Jupp Heynckes’ guarantee of a starting place yesterday.
  • BATE (4-4-1-1): Gorbunov; Radkov, Bordachev, Filipenko, Polyakov; Baga, Volodko, Hleb, Olekhnovich; Kontsevoy; Rodionov. Subs: Gutor, Yurevich, Simić, Likhtarovich, Renan Bressan, Sivakov, Vasilyuk.
  • BAYERN (4-2-3-1) : Neuer; Rafinha, Van Buyten, Boateng, Contento; Tymoshchuk, Schweinsteiger; Shaqiri, Müller, Kroos; Gomez. Subs: Starke, Dante, Lahm, Ribéry, Javi Martínez, Alaba, Mandžukić.
  • Without any further ado, let's bring you tonight's team news...
  • Bayern are looking to follow in the footsteps of Schalke and Borussia Dortmund, who both topped their respective groups and Jupp Heynckes warned his side earlier this week against complacency, encouraging them not to underestimate the Belarusian side as they had done in Minsk.
  • BATE have already finished their league campaign and have spent the last week in Germany preparing for tonight's fixture against Jupp Heynckes' side. Surely they can't do the double over last year's beaten finalists?
  • BATE Borisov pulled off one of the shock results in the history of the Uefa Champions League when they defeated Bayern Munich 3-1 in October but since then, results have not gone so well for Viktor Goncharenko's side, who have suffered three European defeats on the bounce. Dreams of the knockout stages quickly vanished, but the Belarusian champions have the luxury of having already qualified for the Europa League. Bayern on the other hand, have already secured their progress to the later stages of the competition but they will need to match or better the score of Valencia, who face Lille, if they wish to finish as Group F winners. From the Allianz Arena, my name is Max Bentley and I will be bringing you up-to-date with all the action as it unfolds.
