Selangor - Perak Preview: Red Giants look to down homesick Seladangs
Considering the respective home and away form of both teams, a victory for Selangor looks likely here as they seek to keep their slim title hopes alive

On paper, this fixture seems set to end in only one way, and that’s a home victory. Selangor have been utterly dominant in their home fixtures this season, recording five wins and two draws in seven matches, a stark comparison to their disappointing away form that has seen them win only once in eight games. It’s a similar story for Perak, who have picked up 14 of their 21 total points at home, losing five matches on their travels. All signs point to a Selangor win, but the topsy-turvy nature of the Malaysian Super League means anything can happen.
In midweek Selangor were mere minutes away from an impressive victory at Pahang, but the lack of belief within the team was evident as they threw away two points conceding a stoppage time goal to Surendran. The Red Giants had several chances to kill the game off at 2-1 but lacked the composure, and the experience, to see the game out, losing their lead twice in the match. It wasn’t the first time they’ve thrown away a lead this season, in the AFC Cup they inexplicably lost the lead three times in their 3-3 draw with Tampines, therefore if the game is tight going into the closing stages, expect some nervy Selangor fans.
One bright spot for the Red Giants on Tuesday was the return to goalscoring form of Francis Forkey Doe who netted twice, the second strike being a 20 yard thunderbolt into the top corner. Before the match the Liberian forward commented: “I really want to get my goal-scoring form back,” and despite the rough treatment he received from Damion Stewart, Forkey Doe looked back to his best. His partnership with the often underrated Amri Yayhah has really blossomed in recent months, if the Seladangs are to get a positive result here then close attention will need to be paid to the tricky playmaker.
As for the visitors, consistency has been the ongoing issue. After the impressive 3-0 victory over Johor Darul Takzim, Perak's head coach Azraai Khor urged his team to be more consistent and keep up their winning momentum in the game against strugglers Felda United. Perak duly lost that game 3-1 and it seems for every positive victory like the recent victories against Johor and PKNS, there are letdowns such as the losses against Felda and T-Team.
The introduction of Brazilian forward Paulo Rangel to the team has paid dividends, he has five goals in his last three outings, including opening the scoring in the midweek victory over Negeri Sembilan. For Perak the challenge is to support Rangel in the goalscoring department, Mohd Azlan Ismail stepped up to the plate with a goal on Tuesday. Abdul Hadi Yahaya only has three league goals this season, therefore Friday night may be an opportune time for him to get his shooting boots back on.
